How did the Medici family become one of the most powerful dynasties in Europe? That is the question this series, inspired by real events, seeks to answer. The drama plunges viewers into Renaissance Florence, amidst the political conspiracies and power struggles of the 15th century.

After The Tudors and The Borgias, another legendary historical dynasty was given its own television series: Medici: Masters of Florence. Broadcast between 2016 and 2019, this three-season historical drama traces the rise of the Medici family in Renaissance Florence. Political conspiracies, internal rivalries, artistic patronage… the series offers an immersive journey into 15th-century Italy.

A journey into Renaissance Florence

The series begins in 1429, when Giovanni de’ Medici, a powerful Florentine banker and the son of a shepherd, is found murdered. His son Cosimo inherits a vast financial empire and must protect his family against political plots, aristocratic rivalries and tensions within the clan itself. The story follows the Medici family across several generations, from Giovanni through to Lorenzo de’ Medici, better known as Lorenzo the Magnificent.

Over the course of the episodes, the series blends historical events with personal drama, romance and conspiracy. Epidemics, secret alliances and family conflicts keep the narrative moving at a gripping pace.

A series balancing fiction and historical fact

For the series, creators Nicholas Meyer and Frank Spotnitz chose a romanticised approach to history. They imagined the assassination of Giovanni de’ Medici — a fictional ending, since historians do not actually know how the famous banker died. The plot device proves effective, sparking a political investigation and fuelling rivalries within the family’s inner circle as they seek to uncover the culprit.

The series also explores the innovative workings of the Medici bank, which used Church networks to develop a revolutionary financial system across Europe. This modern economic mechanism, highly advanced for its time, is clearly explained throughout the series.

Dustin Hoffman plays Giovanni de’ Medici, while Richard Madden portrays his son and heir, Cosimo de’ Medici.

A stellar cast and sumptuous Italian settings

Filmed largely in Tuscany, Medici: Masters of Florence impresses with the care devoted to its historical reconstruction. Many scenes were shot in iconic locations such as the Palazzo Vecchio, the Basilica of San Lorenzo and Florence Cathedral (Santa Maria del Fiore).

Alongside the landscapes, the costumes, soundtrack and cast all contribute to the series’ grand atmosphere. In fact, no fewer than three Game of Thrones actors appear in the show: Richard Madden as Cosimo de’ Medici, alongside Sean Bean and David Bradley (best known for his role as Walder Frey).

Consisting of three seasons of eight episodes each, the series ended without any official explanation, though it remains available on Prime Video. An entertaining watch which, despite certain fictionalised elements, offers viewers the chance to learn more about this remarkable historical family.
