Anwar Ibrahim did not mince his words this week when he called out how government-backed business loans have been handed out for decades based on personal connections rather than merit.

He pointed specifically to cases where aid recipients used the money to upgrade their own lifestyle instead of growing the business, citing examples of people moving into more luxurious offices and buying vehicles with loan money before the business itself eventually collapsed. What makes this notable is the source. This is not an opposition politician throwing accusations, it is the prime minister himself, in charge of both the government and its finances, admitting the system he oversees has been abused for years.

Anwar stressed that going forward, government assistance should only go to entrepreneurs who can show real commitment and capability, rather than those who simply know the right people. Whether that translates into actual audits and consequences, or just another round of public scolding, remains to be seen.

My Opinion

Good on Anwar for saying this plainly instead of dancing around it, but I have heard versions of this speech before from different leaders over the years, and the pattern never really changes. Calling it out publicly is step one. Step two is actually tightening how these loans get approved and making sure someone is checking in six months later to see if the business is real or if it is just a shell for buying a new car. Until that happens, this is just a strongly worded reminder that everyone will forget by next quarter.

The timing of these remarks is worth noting too. They came just a week before Johor goes to the polls, in a state where Bumiputera economic empowerment is a genuinely sensitive and closely watched policy area. Whether Anwar's comments were purely about fixing a broken system or partly aimed at pre-empting opposition attacks on government spending is a fair question, though the substance of what he described, loans handed out on connections rather than merit, is a real structural problem regardless of the political timing.

It is also worth remembering that Anwar holds both the prime minister's office and the finance portfolio, which means he cannot easily pass the blame for this kind of mismanagement onto a separate minister or agency. If audits and tighter vetting do follow, the responsibility for making that happen sits squarely with him.
