With A Little Chaos, Kate Winslet and Alan Rickman transport us to the Versailles of Louis XIV, at the heart of the creation of the Sun King’s magnificent gardens.
Alan Rickman is best known for his iconic roles, from Professor Snape in Harry Potter to Colonel Brandon in Sense and Sensibility, but the British actor was also a director. In 2014, he stepped behind the camera to direct A Little Chaos, a historical drama that takes us behind the scenes of the Palace of Versailles during the reign of Louis XIV. It is a refined journey into the 17th century, at the heart of the sumptuous gardens designed to astonish all of Europe.

A woman at the heart of the gardens of Versailles
A Little Chaos immerses us in Versailles in 1682, during the reign of Louis XIV. We follow Sabine de Barra, a landscape designer with innovative and forward-thinking ideas. Independent and daring, she quickly catches the attention of André Le Nôtre, the king’s celebrated garden architect, who entrusts her with the creation of a grove destined to become one of the centrepieces of the royal estate: 'the open-air ballroom'.
Yet behind this lush green world lies a ruthless court. Sabine must learn to navigate a male-dominated environment while confronting court etiquette and political intrigue. As the project progresses, a special bond develops between her and Le Nôtre…

A romantic historical drama
Although the story takes several liberties with history (the character of Sabine de Barra is fictional), A Little Chaos offers an interesting perspective on seventeenth-century Versailles. Court intrigues naturally play a central role, but the film focuses above all on the gardens and the artistic creativity behind their creation. The atmosphere of the period and the reconstruction of the setting also deserve praise, especially considering that filming mainly took place in other châteaux.
Above all, however, it is the cast that immediately captures attention. Kate Winslet shines as a free-spirited and modern heroine, Matthias Schoenaerts delivers an excellent André Le Nôtre, Stanley Tucci plays the eccentric Duke Philippe d’Orléans, and Alan Rickman portrays a thoughtful and regal Louis XIV. Altogether, it makes for an engaging and immersive piece of entertainment that fans of the genre are sure to enjoy. The film is now available on Prime Video.
