Centuries-old traditions, arranged marriages, a search for meaning and freedom... This little-known Netflix series transports viewers to the heart of the fascinating India of the 1950s. A visual delight and thoroughly enjoyable entertainment.
Dreaming of travelling to India? Until the day comes, this series might just provide the perfect escape for a few episodes. Its title is A Suitable Boy. Adapted from Vikram Seth's acclaimed novel, this miniseries takes us to an India undergoing profound change, only a few years after gaining independence. Political upheaval, love stories, and long-standing family traditions all feature prominently. The result is a fully immersive portrait of a society torn between modernity and cultural heritage.

1950s India: arranged marriage and the pursuit of freedom
Mrs Rupa Mehra has only one goal: to find a 'suitable boy' for her youngest daughter, Lata. No sooner has her elder daughter's arranged marriage been celebrated than it becomes the turn of the 19-year-old university student, who is also expected to marry the man selected by her family. However, this is not what Lata wants. Longing for greater freedom, she refuses to allow her mother to determine her future.
In Vikram Seth's epic novel, readers follow the lives of four major families over the course of eighteen months. The series initially focuses on Lata and her three suitors—Kabir, Haresh, and Amit—before broadening its scope to explore the exploits of her brother Maan, the political career of her father Mahesh, and the tensions within a society newly emerged from colonial rule.

A series as captivating as it is exotic
Beyond its romantic storyline, A Suitable Boy reveals a rich and genuinely captivating world. Lavish weddings, family celebrations, religious ceremonies, colourful markets, and grand residences all help bring 1950s India vividly to life. Each episode immerses viewers in everyday life while taking the time to explore the relationships that unite—or divide—different generations. At the same time, it shows how individual choices are often shaped by family expectations and social conventions.
Although Lata, played by Tanya Maniktala, remains the central thread running through the series, the many supporting characters add considerable depth and strength. Brothers, sisters, parents, suitors, and friends are all portrayed in a way that feels both endearing and realistic. These qualities make A Suitable Boy an original and immersive Netflix series that will appeal to fans of historical romance as well as lovers of India.
