A new study has revealed that even brief changes in diet can make a measurable difference to how old your body appears—at least according to a sophisticated blood-based age marker.

The findings, published in a peer-reviewed research journal Aging Cell, show that when older adults switched to healthier eating patterns for just four weeks, their physiological age, as calculated from a suite of blood and clinical tests—shifted in a favourable direction.

The study doesn’t promise age reversal. Nor does it claim you’ll turn back time with a month of eating more vegetables. What it does suggest is that our bodies remain surprisingly responsive to what we eat, even in our later years. In essence, the research offers hope and caution in equal measure.

Researchers at a leading institution designed the study to test whether dietary choices could alter a composite measure known as “KDMAge”. This score, drawn from multiple clinical biomarkers, aims to estimate the functional status of the body compared to typical age norms. It’s not simply a tally of years lived. Instead, it’s a reflection of how well the body’s systems are working—heart, metabolism, inflammation, and more.

The trial involved 104 Australians aged between 65 and 75. Each participant was generally healthy, neither a smoker nor suffering from serious chronic illness. They were assigned to one of four diets: omnivorous high-fat, omnivorous high-carbohydrate, semi-vegetarian high-fat or semi-vegetarian high-carbohydrate. For four weeks, all meals were delivered directly. Participants could eat as much as they liked from the provided menu. Researchers found their δAge dropped by roughly three to four years compared to the high-fat group.

Semi-vegetarian diets also led to improvements, but the results were less decisive. The semi-vegetarian high-fat group saw a significant reduction using one version of the algorithm but not another. The semi-vegetarian high-carbohydrate group improved too, though statistical significance was not reached in every model.

What does this mean for you?

In simple terms, switching to a diet higher in complex carbohydrates or plant-based foods can nudge your health markers in the right direction—even if you’re already in your sixties or seventies.

But there’s a catch. The study authors are cautious about interpreting these results as proof of anti-ageing. The KDMAge score is made up of biomarkers that can respond quickly to dietary changes—blood pressure, glucose levels, cholesterol, inflammation and more. A healthier diet can improve these readings within days or weeks. That doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve slowed the ageing process itself.

The strongest result came from diets rich in complex carbohydrates. That matters because not all carbohydrates are equal. The trial diets were based on whole foods: grains, legumes, vegetables and fruit. Refined sugars and ultra-processed foods were not part of the plan. So “high-carbohydrate” here means quality carbs—not fizzy drinks or white bread.

Plant-based eating also emerged as beneficial. Semi-vegetarian diets tended to reduce δAge compared with high-fat omnivorous diets. This fits with decades of research linking plant-rich diets to lower inflammation and better metabolic health.

But the study couldn’t pinpoint which component drove the benefit—was it plant protein, fibre content, reduced fat or something else? It’s likely a combination of factors working together.

The trial’s design gives confidence that diet was responsible for these changes. All food was provided; participants were closely monitored; compliance was high. That reduces confounding factors and makes the results robust.

There are limitations though. The sample size was modest—just over 100 participants. They were healthier than average at baseline, so findings may not apply equally to people with chronic conditions or poorer health profiles. The intervention lasted only four weeks; long-term effects remain unknown.

Moreover, while KDMAge is linked with health outcomes in large population studies, its meaning in short interventions is less clear-cut. It’s a proxy measure, not an absolute indicator of how fast you’re ageing.

Researchers validated their modified algorithms against American datasets (NHANES), showing strong correlations with age and mortality risk. However, performance differed between men and women; predictive power was stronger in males in some analyses.

Despite these caveats, the findings are newsworthy for several reasons.

First, they demonstrate that even later in life, diet can influence health-related biomarkers rapidly. The body remains adaptable; its systems respond to changes in nutrition.

Second, they highlight the importance of food quality—not just macronutrient ratios but the source and processing level of foods eaten.

Third, they reinforce broader public health advice: diets rich in whole grains, legumes, vegetables and fruit are linked with better health outcomes.

Fourth, they caution against overselling short-term benefits as proof of age reversal. Health markers can swing quickly; sustained change is what matters most.

This new research shows that older bodies remain open to positive change. A month of eating better can improve key health signals, even if it doesn’t roll back your biological clock for good.

The findings echo what experts have said for years. There’s no single magic food or nutrient that guarantees longevity. Instead, it’s about patterns, the everyday choices that accumulate into systemic benefits.
