If you haven’t seen this video recently posted by MBSB Bank, you should.
This is a raw, heartbreaking glimpse into the hidden struggles of children growing up in Chow Kit, a reality most of us don’t know about.
One boy, Arif, shares his story. And one sentence from him will stay with you long after you finish watching: “If only I were a good boy, maybe he would love me again and never leave us.”
He isn’t talking about a lost toy or a missed birthday party. He’s talking about his father who walked away, leaving him behind.
“I Just Want My Father to Come Home.”
We often think of childhood as a time of joy — laughter, play, and a home filled with love. But for many children in Chow Kit, childhood looks very different.
For them, survival comes before playtime. Many live in cramped, unstable housing, sometimes with multiple families squeezed into a single small space. Others don’t even have that. They sleep wherever they can find shelter for the night.
Some children never even step foot in a classroom because school is a privilege they can’t afford. Instead, they roam the streets, learning toughness before they learn how to read.
Despite everything, many of them don’t ask for much.
Not fancy toys. Not big houses. Not even a comfortable life. Some, like Arif, just want his father to come home.

A Place Where Hope Still Exists
No child should ever have to feel like love is something they need to earn.
For Arif, hope came in the form of Yayasan Chow Kit, a safe space where children like him can receive the support they need.
Here, he found something he had been missing: the chance to be a child. He had a place to learn, to play, and to dream of a future beyond the struggles he grew up with. Despite everything, Arif held onto his dream of becoming a teacher.
He studied. He persevered. And today, Arif is a teacher.

There Are More Kids Like Arif
While Arif’s story has a hopeful ending, not every child in Chow Kit is as lucky. Thankfully, organizations like Yayasan Chow Kit and MBSB Bank are working to change this.
MBSB Bank understands the importance of children’s welfare, not just in Chow Kit but across underserved communities nationwide. Through educational interventions, skill-building programs, and financial aid for B40 families, the goal is to ensure that more children have the opportunity to learn, to grow, and to hope for a better tomorrow.
So what can you do?
Watch Arif’s story. And then, ask yourself: how many more children like him need our help?
