A video has gone viral recently, showing a school of catfish swimming in unison in an open drain in Singapore, mesmerisingly looking like a single entity from afar.
Shared by user Regine Tan on the Singapore Wildlife Sightings Facebook page on Wednesday (10 December), the video has since garnered over 1,300 reactions.

In the video, thousands of catfish can be seen swimming in unison across the shallow drain, which was revealed to be located in Canberra in Sembawang, Singapore.
Together, the aquatic animals seem to mimic a larger animal from afar, with many catfish in front forming an oval-like shape, while the ones at the back form a much narrower shape akin to a tail. Together, they seem to ‘catfish’ as a large tadpole.
In the caption, the original poster asked, “This looks like in thousands or in millions. Are those catfish? Where are they going? Is it native to Singapore?”

Singaporeans joked that the school of catfish is migrating from the country due to stress
In the comments, many Singaporean netizens were awed by the sighting, with one commenter noting that it showed the country’s water quality is able to support aquatic life.
Besides that, one netizen joked that the school of catfish was migrating from Singapore due to life in the country being too stressful and expensive.
Another jokester said that an automated toll should be placed in their path, so that Singapore could get more income and ultimately lower its GST rate back to 7%.
On a more serious note, one netizen believed that the school of fish is the Sagor Sea Catfish or Hexanematichthys Sagor, a marine species that lives in coastal waters and regularly swims upstream into canals and even ventures into freshwater. He further noted that similar schools of the species were seen before in the country.
