Tens of thousands of people on Tuesday protested in Argentina against cuts to funding for public universities.
Students, teachers, trade union representatives and opposition figures took to the streets in Buenos Aires and other cities across the South American country to demonstrate against the austerity policies of ultra-liberal President Javier Milei, who took over in 2023.
In Buenos Aires, protesters gathered on the Plaza de Mayo, the square outside the presidential palace.
"Without education, there is no future," read banners carried by demonstrators.
Organizers said around 600,000 people took part in the capital and 1.5 million nationwide, the newspaper Clarín reported. The newspaper La Nación, however, estimated the number of demonstrators in Buenos Aires at around 120,000.
The rallies called for the implementation of a law already passed by Congress to fund state universities, which are tuition-free in Argentina.
The government has filed a legal challenge against the law, arguing that it does not specify where the planned funds should come from. Instead, it is calling for greater transparency and efficiency in spending.
The matter now lies with the Supreme Court.
