Thousands with type 2 diabetes could swap daily injections for weekly jab

  • Hundreds of thousands of people with type 2 diabetes could benefit from a new weekly jab that reduces required annual insulin injections by 86 per cent.
  • The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) has recommended insulin efsitora alfa, also known as Onswik, in final draft guidance.
  • Manufactured by Eli Lilly, the weekly treatment is shown to work as well as daily injections, cutting annual doses from 365 to 52.
  • Health experts said the jab will offer greater freedom and particularly benefit frail patients, those with sight loss and people relying on carers.
  • The treatment must now be approved by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) before it can be rolled out on the NHS.
