Recently, there were raids on a number of shops selling Swatch Pride watches in Kuala Lumpur. I was much surprised. So, I decided to read up more about this range of watches and understand better why these raids took place.
This range of brightly coloured watches, according to the Swatch website was inspired by the iconic Pride flag. However, when I looked at the watches and the significance of the colours, I was hardly offended or threatened. The red watches signify passion and love. The orange colour represents fun and celebration while the yellow represents new ideas and thoughts. Green represents growth and prosperity; blue is the colour of serenity and calm while purple encourages the wearer to be proud of who he or she is. I think all of these are positive values that will strengthen us as a people or nation. True, there are two rainbow loops that bring the colours together; but should that be a problem?

All of us who are educated know how rainbows are formed: They are caused by sunlight and atmospheric conditions. Seeing a rainbow in the sky after the rain brings smiles to our faces and brightens our day. The rainbow in the sky reminds me of God’s promise of his covenant with man in Genesis 9:13 and it is so reassuring.
So, I would say that the rainbow is a creation of an almighty God. We, as created beings have no control of when or where a rainbow can appear. We see spectacular appearances of rainbows in many places. We see Rainbow Rivers in Southern Chile and Colombia. There is also a rainbow waterfall in Thailand, Sukhothai Province (Ramkhamhaeng National Park) Do you know that there is even a Rainbow Waterfall right here in Malaysia, in the town of Sg Lembing? Then, there are rainbow mountains in various parts of the world like China, Argentina and the USA.
For everything that exists and all that happens in life, we can choose to be positive or negative. We can respond in understanding and love or react in suspicion and anger. Let us not be robbed of our ability to understand and appreciate the beauty of creation that surrounds us.
Each time, we see a rainbow in our Malaysian skies, let us all give thanks to God.
