RANAU: A 38-year-old man has been remanded for four days to assist police investigations into an alleged criminal threat against a 74-year-old shopkeeper in Kampung Mohimboyon, Kundasang.
The suspect was detained at about 5.32pm on Nov 5 following a police report lodged by the elderly complainant, who alleged that the man had threatened to smash his head during a confrontation at his grocery shop.
According to the complainant’s statement, the incident occurred at about 9am on the same day while he was at his shop in the village.
He alleged that the suspect confronted him and became angry over an accusation that he had been telling villagers that the suspect was involved in theft.
The complainant denied making such an allegation.
During the confrontation, the suspect allegedly told him: “If I did not respect you as an elderly person, I would smash your head.”The complainant said the threat had left him fearful for his personal safety, prompting him to lodge a police report.
The case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation.
An application for a four-day remand order was made at the Ranau Magistrate’s Court on Nov 6 under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
The remand period runs from Nov 6 to Nov 9 to facilitate further investigations, including recording the suspect’s statement under Section 112 of the Criminal Procedure Code, as well as obtaining his photographs and fingerprints.
Police also cited the need to establish whether the suspect would cooperate with investigations if released.
The investigation is ongoing.
