- Three Americans have died and 12 remain missing following twin earthquakes in Venezuela, the US State Department has said.
- Acting President Delcy Rodriguez’s government says at least 1,750 people have died and thousands have been injured as a result of the earthquakes.
- Gianluca Rampolla, the United Nations' resident coordinator in Venezuela, said the death toll could be significantly higher, adding: “I can offer an estimate: we are procuring — and this has been agreed with local authorities — 10,000 body bags.”
- According to NASA estimates, some 59,000 buildings were damaged or destroyed by the earthquakes.
- Rescue operations, including those involving teams from Ecuador and the US, have faced challenges, with some efforts being halted due to lack of signs of life.
