
THREE crew members died and three others were injured after a container caught fire aboard the MSC Kyparissia at the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) around midday today.
The Johor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) reported receiving an emergency call at 12.23pm, with teams from the Iskandar Puteri Fire and Rescue Station arriving at 12.40pm.
According to JBPM Johor, the fire broke out during unloading operations in the lower deck area of Block 5.
“The incident involved six male victims, comprising three fatalities: a 59-year-old Malaysian, a Filipino in his 40s, and a British national in his 40s.
“Three injured workers included a 26-year-old Malaysian and two Filipinos in their 40s.
“All injured victims were transported to Gleneagles Hospital Iskandar Puteri by PTP ambulances,” the department said in a statement.
Initial firefighting efforts were carried out by the PTP fire team using two tug boats, supported by unloading operations by Quay 118.
JBPM Johor added that a Forward Command Post has been established at the scene, and firefighting operations continue in collaboration with PTP personnel.
“Nine personnel, a Fire Rescue Tender, and a utility vehicle have been deployed for the operation. Further updates will be provided as the situation develops,” the statement said. - November 7, 2025
