Three fatalities arise from Kanowit, Sarikei road collisions

TWO separate road accidents in Sarawak today claimed the lives of three individuals, with several others escaping unharmed

In Kanowit, two men died when their Perodua Axia collided with a fuel-laden tanker along Jalan Majau near Sekolah Kebangsaan Ulu Majau at around 12.32pm.

The victims, identified as Musa Minggat, 50, and Budin Minggat, 69, were trapped inside the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesperson for the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) said a team from Kanowit Fire and Rescue Station, led by PBK II (TBK I) Ribut Udin, rushed to the scene following an emergency call.

"Upon arrival, we found two male victims trapped in the car, while the tanker driver was unharmed," the spokesperson said.

Rescue operations used specialised Rescue Tools (RTA) to extract the victims. The operation concluded at 1.20pm, and the bodies were handed over to the police for further action.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Meanwhile, in Sarikei, a 71-year-old woman, Chieng Lee Ung, died after a collision between a Perodua Axia and a Perodua Aruz in front of Perumahan Kastam at approximately 1.25pm. Four others, including a child, survived the incident.

A Sarawak Fire and Rescue Operations Centre spokesperson said the Axia driver, Chieng Lee Ung, was confirmed dead at the scene, while her 42-year-old passenger was uninjured. The two occupants of the Aruz were also reported safe.

"The fire team arrived within two minutes of receiving the call and used a stretcher to remove the victim before handing the body to the police," the spokesperson said.

Operations were completed at 1.40pm. The cause of this collision is still under investigation. - October 29, 2025
