Three Myanmar-based syndicate victims return safely to Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR – Three individuals who fell prey to a fraudulent Myanmar scam syndicate arrived safely at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) today.

In a statement by the Foreign Ministry, the victims, aged between 19 to 33, have been handed over to the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) for further investigations.

The ministry also thanked its Thai counterparts as well as PDRM for their joint efforts, together with the Malaysian embassy in Thailand, following the successful rescue of these victims.

According to the ministry, there have been at least 519 reports regarding Malaysian citizens who have been victims of syndicates from Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand as of yesterday.

They stated that from the 373 victims who were saved, only 346 victims have since managed to return to the country.

The remaining 27 victims are still being held in Thailand’s detention centre and are still unable to come home.

Additionally, the ministry, through its embassies in the countries involved, will double down on its efforts with the PDRM to rescue the remaining 146 victims. – The Vibes, January 17, 2023
