Kemaman police have detained three Myanmar refugees to assist in an investigation into the alleged sexual assault of an intellectually disabled woman in Chukai.

CHUKAI: Three Myanmar male refugees working as construction and cleaning workers were detained in connection with a sexual case involving an intellectually disabled woman in this district yesterday.

Kemaman district police chief Supt Mohd Razi Mohd Rosli said the three men, aged between 19 and 28, were arrested after receiving a report regarding the alleged sexual case from a 20-year-old woman on Friday.

“All three suspects have been remanded from Aug 8 to 12 to assist in the investigation. The investigation is still ongoing to identify other suspects who may be involved,” he said in a statement today.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 376 of the Penal Code.

He said the police need to fine-tune the investigation and to give sufficient space and time to the 23-year-old victim before completing the probe, considering that the woman is an intellectually disabled person.

In addition, Mohd Razi said his team also detected the spread of a video on the TikTok social media platform at around 8.30 pm yesterday, showing a crowd gathering in front of the Kampung Enjin Gergaji Flats here following allegations of a sexual offence linked to the suspects.

He said that the public is advised not to make any baseless speculation as the case is still under police investigation.

“The police also advised the public not to take hasty actions against Rohingya refugees that could lead to criminal acts,” he said.

Members of the public who have information related to the case can contact any nearby police station or call 09-859 2222 to connect to the investigating officer, Inspector Mohd Hadaza Mat Amin.
