Election campaigns are typically marked by serious speeches, policy debates, and strategic promises. But every once in a while, a candidate emerges who dares to infuse a little humour into the political arena. As the state election approaches, some candidates are ditching the traditional playbook and embracing unconventional campaign strategies that not only raise eyebrows but also bring a smile to our faces.

Our commentary is based on a report by Scoop that has compiled these antics that they termed as shenanigans.

Consider Steven Lai Choon Wen, a Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate for the Balakong constituency. Lai has decided that the way to voters' hearts is through dancing shoes.

His TikTok videos, featuring quirky dance routines and catchy tunes, have taken the internet by storm.

I never knew that a political candidate could moonlight as a dancer!

While Lai's moves might not earn him a spot on a talent show, or Dancing with the Stars, he certainly has earned himself some attention from netizens who helped viral the video.

On the other hand, Nurul Syazwani, daughter of former Umno veteran Tan Sri Noh Omar, took a different approach, enlisting the help of a local comedian to create a light-hearted video.

This video, while seemingly bizarre with its references to "light in the darkness," manages to inject humour into her campaign trail. Who wouldn't chuckle at the sight of a comedian pointing to a politician's face on his shirt?

Wan Zulaika Anua of Barisan Nasional (BN) chose a more hands-on strategy. Instead of focusing solely on policy discussions, she showed her softer side by cutting a young boy's hair as part of a skill-sharing program.

This unconventional gesture not only showcased her community involvement but also demonstrated that politicians can have a lighter touch.

And then there's Thanusha Ramanieswaran, Muda's candidate for the Sentosa state seat, who engaged in a playful "This or That Challenge." While her video may not have gone viral, it highlights her effort to connect with younger voters on their terms, showcasing her relatable side in the process.

While these quirky campaign tactics might not be the norm, they do offer a refreshing break from the sometimes monotonous campaign trail.

They remind us that politicians are people too, capable of laughter and unexpected antics. As voters, we're used to hearing about policies and promises, but these candidates are reminding us that there's room for laughter in politics as well.

In the end, whether these offbeat strategies translate into votes remains to be seen.

However, they have undoubtedly succeeded in capturing our attention and sparking conversations.

As we watch these candidates dance, cut hair, and engage in light-hearted challenges, we're reminded that even in the midst of the serious business of politics, a good laugh can be a powerful way to connect with voters.

So let's applaud these candidates for daring to inject some humour into this election season, making us smile while pondering our choices at the ballot box.

Let's hope Malaysia's election campaigns in years to come will have more of such quirky acts injected by candidates in between their serious political rhetoric proving that we Malaysians do have a sense of humour.
