THE National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA) said it has established a partnership with TikTok Philippines to create a mechanism to report, review, and act on discriminatory content targeting people with disabilities (PWDs).
This comes after the NCDA received reports of online content, which includes memes of high-ranking government officials ridiculing PWDs.
“Digital platforms have developed into influential venues for shaping people's opinions and attitudes toward persons with disabilities. Through our cooperation with TikTok Philippines, we are strengthening our capacity to address issues while promoting content that reflects respect, inclusion, and the real abilities of persons with disabilities," the NCDA said in a statement on Saturday.
TikTok Philippines said defamatory content against PWDs violates its community guidelines that promote polite communication and content filtering.
The NCDA added that such content violates Republic Act (RA) 7277, or the Magna Carta for Disabled Persons Act, and RA 9442, which prohibits public ridicule and vilification of persons with disabilities.
The NCDA urged content creators to be responsible.
“In order to advance disability inclusion and support a polite, accessible, and inclusive online environment for all Filipinos, the NCDA is still collaborating with stakeholders such as digital platforms, government agencies, and private organizations,” the NCDA said.
