TikTok Shop and KPDN launch #ShopSafe Campaign to tackle online scams

TIKTOK Shop Malaysia has launched a joint initiative with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) to bolster consumer safety and awareness in the growing digital marketplace.

The #ShopSafe campaign, unveiled this week, aims to combat rising incidents of online scams by equipping users with practical safety tips and encouraging best practices when shopping online.

Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living, Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, said the government welcomed the collaboration with the popular e-commerce platform as part of efforts to educate the public on responsible digital habits.

“We are delighted to partner with TikTok Shop to educate Malaysians on best practices when shopping online and to empower them with the right knowledge and tools to #ShopSafe digitally,” he said.

Armizan noted that most reported e-commerce scams occurred outside legitimate platforms, where fraudsters lured users to complete transactions via phone numbers, suspicious links, or direct bank transfers.

“TikTok Shop's dedication to championing the rights and safety of consumers is commendable, and we look forward to combating online scams together,” he added.

TikTok Shop Malaysia’s Director of Strategic Partnerships, Nur Azre Abdul Aziz, reiterated the platform’s commitment to safety.

“Safety is our top priority at TikTok Shop. We continuously invest in people and technologies for Malaysians to enjoy worry-free and secure online shopping experiences, such as through our robust return and refund policies,” she said.

She explained that TikTok Shop employs strict listing and seller verification protocols, and actively monitors for fraud. Suspicious sellers or listings are rejected outright, with constant updates to stay ahead of scam tactics.

“Combating online scams is a collaborative effort and we are immensely thankful to KPDN for their support in educating Malaysians on our #ShopSafe tips. Together, we can keep our community informed and up to date on new scam trends, along with ways to safeguard each other against it,” she said.

The campaign urges consumers to conduct all transactions within the official TikTok Shop app using secure in-app payment methods, which ensure traceability and protection under platform policies, including product authenticity guarantees.

TikTok Shop also advises users not to download the app from unofficial sources or click on unfamiliar links that may lead to phishing or malware attacks. Shoppers are warned against sharing personal or financial information, even with those claiming to be TikTok Shop representatives, as the platform does not request such details via messages, calls or emails.

For added security, users are encouraged to enable two-step verification and use the in-app reporting tool to flag suspicious activity. They can also access the Help Center for assistance with orders, including returns and refunds.

The #ShopSafe initiative reflects a broader effort to enhance digital trust as e-commerce continues to expand rapidly in Malaysia and the wider region.
