SABAH FC must maintain their momentum when they face Penang FC in their second Super League match at Likas Stadium this Friday.
Their 3-1 opening win against Star City FC at the same venue provided a strong start to the season.
It definitely boosted their confidence. While the team showed great promise, it is too early to make a definitive judgement.
The players must focus on continuous improvement. Friday’s tie is a timely test to find their footing before the Borneo derby against Kuching City FC at home September 5.
However, the team must not underestimate Penang FC, despite their 1-0 opening loss to DPMM FC.
Meanwhile, it was an exciting season opener for the 4,000 odd fans at Likas Stadium on Monday.
The first goal by Dane Ingham in the 26th minute when he found the net with a powerful left-footed shot after receiving a brilliant defence-splitting pass from Fadzrul Danel had the fans cheering.
Star City FC were quick to respond and managed to equalise in the 28th minute. After a well-executed corner kick, Rafael Vitor expertly headed the ball into the far corner, catching the defence off-guard and putting the score at 1-1.
Both teams showed determination to try to get the second goal. As the game progressed, Sabah FC showed more control over possession, asserting their dominance on the field.
The decisive moment came in the 89th minute when Darren Lok capitalised on a beautifully executed cross by Fadzrul Danel by flicking the ball past the goalkeeper.
This well-deserved goal was a testament to Sabah FC’s relentless effort throughout the match.
The impressive Park Jun Bin, who had a goal disallowed in the 66th minute, finally put one in the net during injury time with a close-range shot, extending the lead to 3-1 to seal the game.
I must say head coach Juan Torres Garrido took a bold risk in the final ten minutes by swapping defender Rawilson Batuil for striker Darren in pursuit of a win.
I also thought the performance of Fadzrul in midfield was particularly notable, playing a key role in orchestrating Sabah FC’s attacking plays.
Congratulations to the Sabah team for their relentless pursuit of victory by fighting until the very end.
Let’s rally behind the players this Friday as we chase our second win of the season!
