While many of us are still celebrating the Year of the Snake, many families in Sabah and Sarawak don’t have the luxury of attending the Chinese New Year celebration this year due to the ongoing floods.
The tourism minister, Dato’ Seri Tiong King Sing, who is also the MP of Bintulu, Sarawak, has cancelled the CNY Open House in the district, which was initially scheduled for February 9, 2025.
In his Facebook post last night (January 31), Tiong said the open house is cancelled so that the state government can focus solely on the rescue work for the flood victims.

“Many victims have lost their homes, belongings, and suffered significant losses due to the severe flooding that hit Bintulu. This situation requires long-term collective efforts to overcome this difficult challenge.”
Tiong also said he spent time visiting the temporary evacuation centres (PPS) at Dewan Suarah and Paragon to assess and ensure that the flood victims’ needs were met.

“I also urge the relevant authorities to fulfill their responsibilities to ensure that these PPS meet the necessary standards and that the basic needs of the victims are properly attended to.”
In the meantime, Tiong added that
medical teams would be deployed to the PPS in the state
to check on the health of the flood victims, whom Tiong said “some are not doing well in terms of health.”

Tiong added that he would continue to help the flood victims throughout the time.
Tiong recently went viral after spending the first day of CNY bracing through the flood water to rescue the trapped flood victims
