When the political tide turns rough in Putrajaya, one man from Bintulu remains unshaken: Dato' Seri Tiong King Sing. While the recent alcohol controversy at the Global Travel Meet (GTM) triggered uproars from PAS, Bersatu and Umno, it also revealed something much deeper: Tiong’s unwavering backbone, GPS’s unbreakable alliance spirit, and the quiet power Sarawak holds in keeping Malaysia’s fragile unity government intact.

Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim knows this well - removing Tiong from Cabinet would not just risk public backlash, it could destabilise the entire unity government. The Prime Minister needs Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) more than ever to stay in power. And within GPS, Tiong, the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) president, stands as both a stormbreaker and a standard-bearer for genuine partnership politics - a trait sorely missing in the Peninsula’s condescending coalition culture.

Unlike the patronising hierarchy often seen among Peninsular coalitions, GPS's main component party - Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu Sarawak (PBB) - treasures its partners with respect and equality. After GE15 and Sarawak’s state elections, GPS coalition bloc fairly distributed ministerial portfolios across its components - not as favours, but as recognition of contribution. This is GPS’s political DNA: partnership over patronage, respect over rivalry.

That very principle is now tested, as PAS and Bersatu attempt to weaponise religion against Tiong. The so-called “alcohol scandal” erupted when PAS demanded Anwar sack him, accusing him of endorsing drinks at a government event, an accusation which was dismantled by Tiong’s clarification, pointing out that the drinks were privately arranged and not under his Ministry or Tourism Malaysia directive.

Francis Paul Siah, a seasoned editor in a fiery opinion piece as reported on Sin Chew, lauded Tiong as a disciplined leader who has never disrespected Malaysia’s religious sensitivities, calling him “a seasoned politician who knows what he can and cannot do.” He even likened the PAS-led outrage to hypocrisy - the same bloc that once expanded gambling draws from 8 to 22 times a year under its own administration. As Muslim commentator Dr Kamsiah Haider quipped, “Nobody’s forcing Muslims to gamble or drink - is our faith so fragile?”

Tiong’s real battle, however, is not about alcohol. It’s about standing up to extremists and hypocrites who exploit faith to divide Malaysians. In that fight, he has become Sarawak’s fiercest defender and Malaysia’s unlikely unifier - a man willing to speak hard truths even when others choose silence.

Francis Siah’s parting message captures it best: “Continue to smash the extremists and bigots in Malaya, but be more tactful with your GPS partners.” It’s both a warning and an endorsement - one that recognises Tiong’s raw power and the need for balance within GPS itself.

For now, PDP and GPS stand firmly behind him, praising his humility, accountability, and hands-on leadership. Even Anwar’s stern reminder about alcohol policies could not overshadow Tiong’s achievements in revitalising Malaysia’s tourism industry and building international goodwill.

As the storm settles, one truth stands tall: Tiong King Sing isn’t just defending himself - he’s defending Sarawak’s dignity and Malaysia’s unity. In an era of loud pretenders, Tiong’s brand of fearless pragmatism may well be the glue that holds this fragile federation together.

A Sarawakian fighter with federal weight: Tiong King Sing proves that true partnership still has a place in Malaysia’s fractured politics.
