Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan proposes Terengganu as a test of Malay political cooperation, urging parties to prove their sincerity before GE16.
KUALA LUMPUR: Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has challenged the party’s “new friends” to prove their sincerity over Malay political cooperation, proposing Terengganu as a testing ground.
Mohamad, better known as Tok Mat, said Umno should not be the only party making efforts to forge political understanding, arguing that genuine cooperation must be demonstrated through a willingness to share seats and test a common electoral formula.
He proposed that after the Melaka state election, one of the four SG4 states, specifically Terengganu, hold an election so Umno could assess the electoral formula adopted by its political partners.
“Let us try to see how sincere our friends are. We ask one of the SG4 states to hold an election.
“You hold an election, I want to see what formula you use. Do it in Terengganu,” he said during his winding-up speech at the 2026 Umno General Assembly today.
Mohamad said the exercise would allow both sides to determine whether calls for Malay unity were genuine or merely aimed at securing political advantage.
“If you are sincere, then let us do it together. If you want to follow the plan, one for you, one for me,” he said.
He cited cooperation in Negeri Sembilan as an example of how seats could be divided between political partners.
Mohamad said the experience showed that Umno and its political partners could work out a mutually acceptable seat-sharing formula, which could potentially be tested elsewhere.
He stressed that the proposed approach was intended to test the sincerity of the parties involved before any broader formula was considered for the 16th General Election (GE16).
“We want to test the sincerity. We want to see how far it goes. Don’t let us be the only ones trying so hard,” he said.
Mohamad said that if the parties were genuinely sincere in pursuing Malay unity, they should demonstrate how they intended to work together on the ground.
“Then we will see, and we can use whatever formula can unite the Malays to face the 16th General Election,” he said.
