Tok Mat: Tengku Zafrul’s departure from UMNO ‘not unexpected’

UMNO Deputy President Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has described Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz’s departure from the party as neither extraordinary nor shocking, stressing that UMNO’s foundations are built on grassroots strength, the spirit of struggle, and public confidence—not individual prominence.

“People come and go; that is the nature of politics. What matters is that the struggle continues,” Mohamad, commonly known as Tok Mat, said in a statement issued on Saturday.

“I do not see this as something unusual or surprising. It is part of an increasingly open and diverse political dynamic,” he added.

Zafrul, who had served as a UMNO Supreme Council member and UMNO Kota Raja Division Chief, announced on Friday that he was stepping down from all party positions and membership. He also revealed his intention to join Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), stating that the decision came after long reflection on political alignment and direction.

Responding to the move, Mohamad emphasised that UMNO does not hinge its future on any one individual.

“Everyone has the right to choose their own path – and we have chosen to keep moving forward, rebuilding the party’s strength, and defending the people’s welfare,” he said.

He also urged UMNO members and supporters not to be swayed or disheartened by the actions of any single figure.

“To all UMNO members and supporters: do not waver. Do not let the actions of one or two individuals distract us from our mission. This party wasn’t built overnight, and it does not stand because of a single personality,” he asserted.

“UMNO is a responsibility far greater than that. We have more important work ahead – to unite, to improve, and to restore the people’s trust in us.”

While acknowledging that Zafrul’s departure has unsettled some within the party, Mohamad nevertheless recognised the contributions he made during his time in government.

“As a technocrat serving under the UMNO banner, Tengku Zafrul played a key role in economic and financial matters. We thank him for all his contributions.

“I wish Tengku Zafrul the very best, and we pray for even greater success for UMNO,” Mohamad concluded. - May 31, 2025
