The world has always been impressed with the Japanese people who often pick up their own trash when they leave a place.
So, it is not surprising when it was announced that Tokyo will be holding the first-ever litter-picking world cup this November.
This litter-picking world cup is named SpoGomi where Spo means sports and Gomi means trash in Japanese.
The Nippon Foundation said that the qualifying events are scheduled in about 20 countries.
In this sports event, a team consists of 3 people and they have about an hour to collect the litter at a designated area such as the beach or maybe on the streets, reported Kyodo News.
The teams will be judged on the types and amount of litter that they have collected. Oddity Central added that they have to sort the trash out as well.
The team with the most amount of trash will win the competition but in the case of a tie, they would need to see the “quality” of the trash; cigarette butts are considered high-point litter.
SpoGOMI ambassador and Olympic swimming medalist Takeshi Matsuda said,
“Picking up litter can be fun if you make it a game to compete in. Anyone can take part, regardless of age and sex.”
Well, this is certainly killing 2 birds with 1 stone as they can keep the city clean while holding a sports event that raises the people’s competitiveness.
