DAP’s Tony Pua assured his full cooperation with the police during his visit to Bukit Aman in response to being summoned following his comments on the Pardons Board’s decision to reduce the sentence of former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak. According to The Star, Pua, accompanied by his lawyer Haijan Omar, entered Bukit Aman at 1:13 pm and left around 2:30 pm after providing a statement related to a sedition investigation regarding five Facebook posts he made.
Pua, denying any seditious intent in his posts, expressed his commitment to the ongoing investigation, stating, “We hope the police will conduct a thorough and prompt investigation. I will hand over my laptop to the police later as I used it to upload the Facebook posts, and I will also hand over access to my Facebook account.”
The Special Investigation Unit is overseeing the investigation, as announced by Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain, who stated that Pua is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. The police are looking into comments made by Pua on Facebook, which they deem as inciting the public to despise the royal institution, emphasizing that the decision to reduce Najib's sentence was the Agong’s prerogative under Article 42 of the Federal Constitution.
Najib, initially sentenced to 12 years with a RM210 million fine for charges related to abuse of power, breach of trust, and money laundering linked to RM42 million from SRC International, received a halved sentence following the Pardons Board decision. The Federal Territories Pardons Board, chaired by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, made the decision during a meeting on January 29, considering five pardon applications, including Najib’s.
The official statement from the Prime Minister’s Department’s Legal Affairs Division, serving as the board’s secretariat, clarified that the decision was made within the constitutional framework, where the Agong chairs the Pardons Board meetings for the Federal Territories. The board comprises the attorney general, the Federal Territories minister, and up to three other members appointed by the Agong.
