SYDNEY, Aug 10 — Australia has suspended an air-traffic controller and a ground staff member involved in a near-miss at Sydney airport, after two such incidents there in less than two weeks, reported German Press Agency (dpa).
The latest incident occurred yesterday when a Jetstar aircraft and a Qatar Airways Boeing 777 came dangerously close while taxiing. The Jetstar pilot had to brake sharply to avoid a collision. One crew member was injured, according to broadcaster ABC, but no passengers were hurt.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has opened an investigation. Its chief, Angus Mitchell, said the incident occurred at low speed but could have had serious consequences, the Sydney Morning Herald reported today.
The head of state-owned air traffic management provider Airservices Australia, Rob Sharp, was also called to account by Transport Minister Catherine King.
The incidents come amid rising air traffic and a shortage of air-traffic controllers. The staffing shortage has forced a reduction in the number of take-offs and landings at times to keep operations safe, causing delays.
Chris Minns, premier of Australia’s New South Wales state, warned that the problems could damage Sydney’s reputation as a business and tourism hub, but said safety must take priority over the frustration of passengers. — Bernama-dpa
