The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) recently organised a Chinese New Year event that took place on Sunday night (February 16) in Klang to foster unity. A Muslim preacher, Prof. Dr. Mohd Ridhuan Tee Abdullah had something to say about it.

“Why did JAKIM organise this CNY event? For what purpose?”

In Ridhuan’s Facebook post, he said that he had barely heard about JAKIM organising a CNY event in the past, and added that the Islamic organisation should’ve left the organising tasks to other non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

Ridhuan also questioned JAKIM’s purpose for organising the event, fearing it may have crossed some boundaries.

“What happens during the eye-dotting ceremony? What about the ritual to welcome the God of Wealth?”

“Would JAKIM be responsible if kemungkaran (sin) took place during the event?”

“Don’t be so desperate, JAKIM”

Ridhuan also urged JAKIM to focus on other matters and not on organising such events. To him, JAKIM is politicising themselves by getting involved in a CNY event.

“For what? Are you trying to show others that you’re celebrating diversity? Haven’t you done a lot to show that?”

“It looks really bad for JAKIM to be directly involved in organising such an event. Leave the jobs to other NGOs. There are many other ways to celebrate diversity.”

Ridhuan also reminded JAKIM to “stop being so desperate” to celebrate diversity.

In a statement by JAKIM posted on its Facebook, the organisation clarified that it wasn’t their first time organising such an event. It is an annual event to foster unity in a diverse society.

“We urge everyone not to worsen this matter and let’s support the effort to strengthen unity.”

What do you think of this?
