Top 12 complaints of 5-star hotels

As a frequent traveller who stays in five-star hotels and resorts all over the world, I have noticed several flaws in those hotels which occur on a regular basis no matter which country they are in. To me, these are inexcusable because of the five-star prices you pay e.g. RM2,000 plus for a room per night. Below are the ones that get repeated everywhere. Frankly, I am very surprised because many of these problems can be easily rectified – some just require a bit of common sense.

1.       Blackout curtains that don’t fully prevent light from seeping in (only 2 out of 10  five-star hotels curtains actually fully prevent light from coming in);

2.       Floors that are too smooth which then become slippery if wet;

3.       Disappointing buffet breakfast such as fruits that are not ripe enough or insufficient food;

4.       Bathtubs that don’t have handles, badly constructed bathtubs (surface too slippery, too big/small, too high) with no mat or friction surface to prevent falls when getting in or out; and no bath salt or bath bomb provided;

5.       No spray gun or washlet (or bidet) provided;

6.       Stand lamps that have to be individually switched on /off and/or the switch is too near the floor and you have to bend over quite a bit;

7.       Too few sockets or no local plugs provided;

8.       Failure to provide knife to cut fruits (if fruits such as oranges or dragonfruits are provided);

9.       Slippers that don’t fit or are difficult to slip in/out or can’t be used in the shower as they get wet and damp;

10.    Limited TV channels (only local channel/ bad reception / screen too small);

11.    Too many staircases with few ramps (difficult for those in wheelchairs, the elderly or babies in prams) especially in the case of sprawling resorts, or not enough buggies to transport guests;

12.   Staff who move/touch your very personal stuff like personal hygiene items such as toothbrushes, combs, underwear, and personal towel or throw away your personal items that you still want to keep such as labels of goods. In one case, the cleaning staff used the plastic bag that I brought with me as a placemat under a leaking flower pot, for example. Well, I definitely needed the plastic bag for my own use!
