California Gov. Gavin Newsom publicly questioned whether Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has taken a drug test recently following an animated media appearance in Panama.
Hegseth dismissed “misrepresented” reports of deteriorating mental health and poor morale aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, which has been deployed for over 250 days during the ongoing war with Iran.
“He's delusional, manic, agitated,” the California governor, who is considered a potential 2028 candidate, wrote on X. Newsom added: “Has Pete Hegseth done a drug test lately? Why are the results not public?”
Families of sailors on the USS Abraham Lincoln have reported severe emotional strain and supply shortages due to the extended deployment.
Prior to his Senate confirmation in January 2025, Hegseth pledged to abstain from alcohol following past allegations of excessive public drinking.
