Torrential rain and flooding as Typhoon Jangmi hammers Japan

  • Typhoon Jangmi made landfall in Japan's Wakayama prefecture, bringing torrential rain and prompting high-level flood and landslide warnings.
  • Authorities advised residents in several areas, including parts of Tokyo, to evacuate or seek shelter due to rising river levels and landslide risks.
  • The storm caused widespread disruption, leading to the cancellation of hundreds of flights, significant delays and suspensions on rail services, and power outages for over 5,000 homes.
  • Some areas, such as Owase, recorded exceptionally high rainfall, with around 50cm over a 24-hour period, and further substantial rainfall is forecast for central and eastern Japan.
  • Jangmi had previously swept through Okinawa, causing minor injuries, and is expected to continue tracking eastward, affecting several regions in the coming days.
