Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing has refuted claims that his ministry or Tourism Malaysia provided alcoholic beverages during a dinner held as part of the Global Travel Meet, stressing that the event in question was fully organised by private sector partners.
According to Tiong, Tourism Malaysia’s role was limited to organising the Global Travel Meet itself, a first-of-its-kind event aimed at strengthening Malaysia’s tourism industry and generating substantial economic activity. He explained that the dinner cited in the controversy was a private initiative by industry players to celebrate the successful launch, not an official government function.
He added that the ministry merely utilised the occasion to launch the Visit Malaysia 2026 events calendar, emphasising that the event had already contributed an estimated RM420 million in economic impact.
The issue arose after Masjid Tanah MP Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin questioned the alleged serving of alcohol at the dinner, suggesting that such actions breached cultural and constitutional norms. Tiong, however, rejected these claims, asserting that no official government resources or planning were involved in the private dinner.
The minister expressed disappointment that the issue had been politicised, stating that such actions risk undermining the efforts made to promote Malaysia as a global tourism destination. He cautioned against misusing constitutional or religious arguments to mislead the public, pointing out that informal industry events are not bound by the same protocols as official government ceremonies.
Tiong said that making unfounded allegations without verifying facts could damage Malaysia’s international image, especially at a time when the nation is working to attract more visitors and restore confidence in its tourism sector. He warned that blowing minor misunderstandings out of proportion could discourage foreign interest and harm economic growth.
He urged Mas Ermieyati and other lawmakers to focus on constructive efforts that enhance the country’s global image, create economic opportunities, and strengthen local tourism rather than amplifying trivial issues.
Tiong concluded by reiterating that every government event organised by his ministry follows established guidelines and respects Malaysia’s cultural and religious sensitivities. He maintained that the dinner in question was a private affair, independent of official government involvement, and that Tourism Malaysia remained committed to professionalism, transparency, and the nation’s tourism advancement.
