PUTRAJAYA — The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac) has issued inspection notices and show-cause letters to several business entities involved in Monday’s fatal accident on the East-West Highway (JRTB) near Tasik Banding, Gerik, Perak.
In a statement today, Motac said the action followed investigations under the Tourism Industry Act 1992 (Act 482), after the ministry received a report on the tragedy involving students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI).
“Motac will also cooperate with the Royal Malaysia Police, the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD), and the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to ensure a thorough investigation is conducted in accordance with the law, so that appropriate action can be taken and the victims’ families receive due protection,” the statement read.
The ministry added that further action would be taken once the investigation is complete.
Motac said it had also visited the victims and their families following the crash, which claimed 15 lives.
The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all tourism-related activities in Malaysia are conducted safely, ethically, and with lasting benefit to future generations.
“Motac expresses its deepest condolences to the families of all victims and prays for the swift recovery of those injured,” it said.
In the incident on Monday, 15 UPSI students were killed when the chartered bus they were travelling in—en route from Jertih, Terengganu, to the main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak—overturned after colliding with a Perodua Alza on the JRTB.
Another 33 people were injured, including the bus driver and attendant, as well as the driver and three passengers of the Perodua Alza. — June 13, 2025
