By the looks of it no one was quite prepared for the massive gas pipeline fire that broke out in Putra Heights, Subang Jaya on the second day of Hari Raya Aidilfitri (April 1) which reportedly left around 190 homes, 148 cars and 12 motorcycles damaged, and tragically, more than a hundred people injured.
But then again, it has been a “fiery” Hari Raya season in this country in more ways than one; first, the KL temple issue threatened to morph into a devastating “fireball”, followed by the balloon seller controversy, and then, the KL Tower bombshell!
In fact, some may have feared that the latter would have turned into another “disaster” if not for the gas pipeline blaze which must have, to some degree, distracted the attention of the public - and the media.
The reality is that, while the temple and the balloon seller episodes were eventually spinned into a racial issue that threatened societal harmony in this country, the row over KL Tower also appeared to be heading towards that same slippery slope!

For context, it was reported that there were parties who were trying to politicise and turn it into another ethnic issue; this was following the tense impasse between the former operators of the tower (MKLSB and Hydroshoppe Sdn Bhd) and Lim Seong Hai Capital Bhd (LSH Capital) after the latter’s appointment as the new concessionaire of the iconic tower.
Among them was said to be vocal pro-opposition activist and blogger Ratu Naga who claimed that yet another “Bumiputera” asset was expected to change hands with the company that previously operated the KL Tower for over 30 years set to be evicted!
For the record, LSH Capital via its 70%-owned unit LSH Service Master Sdn Bhd had recently successfully secured a 20-year concession in early March to operate and maintain KL Tower and its adjacent areas effective April 1, 2025.
Meanwhile, the controversial blogger had posted on her popular Facebook page that the tower was built on a historic site which was once a stronghold during the Selangor Civil War, and that it has always been managed by a “Bumiputera” company since it was officially opened by Dr. Mahathir Mohamad back in 1996.
Ratu Naga: “Why (must) the concession be transferred to a ‘non-Bumiputera’ company?”
For good measure, she also cited the landmark Kampung Baru enclave in the city centre which according to her had come under threat previously, and now it was the turn of the KL Tower; she then went on to ask: “Is this a sign that Bumiputera strategic assets in the country were being gradually whittled away?”
Unsurprisingly, outspoken opposition leader from Bersatu Wan Saiful Wan Jan went further by alleging that the Madani government’s action clearly showed that it was detached from the sensitivities of Muslims in this country!

As it is, MKLSB and its parent company, Hydroshoppe Sdn Bhd, are reportedly suing the government for RM1 billion following the termination of the tower management agreement; it has also named communications minister Fahmi Fadzil and the new KL Tower concessionaire, LSH Capital Bhd in the lawsuit.
But what actually sparked the tense standoff…?
Interestingly, it was reported that in 2022, Hydroshoppe was invited by the then communications ministry to become a strategic partner in revitalising MKLSB's operations and ensuring the tower's continued management and maintenance; it was alleged the then BN-PN government gave “assurances” that a new concession would be granted to them.
However, following the 15th General Election in 2022, and a change in government, the communications ministry, now under Fahmi, awarded the concession to the new concessionaire; this was said to have left MKLSB and Hydroshoppe facing financial and operational uncertainty after they had committed significant financial and operational resources to maintain the tower.
Did the government really have to “appoint” a new operator…?
Meanwhile, on the question of why the government changed the KL Tower concessionaire, it was reported that the existing concession for the management and operation of KL Tower by MKLSB had expired on March 31, 2025 following an extended interim agreement.
As for addressing allegations that another Bumiputera strategic asset was being lost to the “nons” it was clarified that the tower was never sold to any party and that it is still owned by the Government of Malaysia.
Meanwhile, in a press conference last Monday (March 31) an official of the former concessionaire had said that evicting Hydroshoppe and MKLSB would be an act of intimidation and abuse of power as the case over the concession rights was still in the courts; furthermore, he stressed that both were Bumiputera companies and that he was defending the rights of the Bumiputera business community in this country.
Shouldn't the government be protecting the rights of Bumiputera businessmen?
However, there is an intriguing twist in the tale as a top company official is also reportedly standing trial on a charge for offering an annual RM500,000 bribe over 15 years, through an intermediary, to former communications and multimedia minister Annuar Musa allegedly to expedite the acquisition process in connection with the takeover of the KL Tower concession.

Given these revelations, what is in the open now may just be the tip of the iceberg; thus, it is bound to raise several interesting questions which may have wide-ranging ramifications.
Firstly, why the urgency by some to turn the government’s business decision into another divisive “they against us” racial issue? Was it because the raging “bushfire” over the temple and the balloon seller incidents seemed to have died down sooner than expected?
Secondly, is it appropriate to raise the ultra-sensitive “Bumiputeras are being threatened” narrative over every issue that crops up in this country? As it is, aren't there already enough ticking “time bombs” here to contend with?
Thirdly, why weren't the previous concessionaires prepared to show documentary evidence of the so-called agreement done with the previous government? Or were the alleged “assurances” merely given verbally?
In closing, it would seem like there is much more than meets the eye to the KL Tower tussle although efforts to blow it up into another racial conflagration seemed to have been contained; now, the only burning question is: will more “explosive” revelations come to light in the upcoming court cases…?
