Walkaround

When you think of the Corolla, you’d be thinking of a sedan that might be a bit bland. The Toyota GR Corolla on the other hand is wider, more aggressive, and bristling with functional aerodynamic elements. Every vent, fin, and wing serves a purpose, cooling the engine and brakes or enhancing downforce at speed. You’ll also get a forged carbon fibre roof skin, genuine bonnet and wheel vents, flared wheel arches, and gloss black wheels. The triple exhaust pipes, with a larger center outlet, are a clear signal that this is no ordinary Corolla.

Pros
Motorsport DNA

The GR Corolla is born from Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR), the motorsport division responsible for Toyota’s rally and endurance racing programs. Much like AMG for Mercedes Benz, TGR bridges the gap between race cars and road cars. The GR Corolla, alongside the GR86 and GR Yaris, is assembled in specialized facilities where engineers focus solely on extracting maximum performance.
Performance and Driving Experience

The Toyota GR Corolla delivers an exhilarating driving experience that truly sets it apart in the hot hatch segment. The combination of its powerful 1.6 litre turbocharged engine and the Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT) creates a more seamless connection between driver and machine. The iMT’s automatic rev-matching during downshifts enhances smoothness and precision, making gear changes feel effortless and engaging.

The configurable AWD system provides exceptional grip and confidence, allowing drivers to push the car hard through corners with minimal understeer or oversteer. The exhaust note adds a thrilling soundtrack to every drive, reinforcing the car’s sporty character. While the ride can be stiff for daily comfort, the overall driving dynamics reward enthusiasts with a raw, connected, and fun experience that few cars in this price range can match.
As someone who often drives on the slower side (light footed, fuel efficiency-focused), it’s crazy how easy it is to ramp up the speed, even in Eco mode. More often than not, I find myself easily within the 120 to 140km/h and it doesn’t even feel like it thanks to how stable and planted it feels. If this were to be an automatic transmission, I fear that I might just drive beyond those speeds without realizing it, or at least until the engine starts to get a bit too loud. It’s an easy speed ticket-magnet, to say the least.
Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT)
This is where the Malaysian spec manual variant shines. Toyota’s Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT) automatically rev matches during downshifts, making every gear change seamless and keeping the engine in its sweet spot. It transforms the driving experience, allowing even novice drivers to feel like seasoned pros. The engagement of a manual gearbox combined with iMT’s precision makes the GR Corolla far more rewarding than rivals with conventional manuals.
Granted, enthusiasts will likely want to stick to driving without iMT but it’s better to have the option than to not have it at all, especially in today’s world where manual transmission cars are becoming more rare. It will be a lot less daunting for people who haven’t driven a stick shift in ages. Just remember that clutch control is still important and it’s not a feature that will allow you to drive it like an automatic transmission car.
Good Suite of Safety Features

The Toyota GR Corolla MT comes equipped with a comprehensive suite of safety features designed to provide peace of mind and protect occupants in various driving conditions. Key safety technologies include Toyota’s advanced Pre-Collision System (PCS), which helps detect potential frontal collisions and can automatically apply the brakes to mitigate or avoid impact, Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) and Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) work in tandem to help keep the vehicle centered in its lane, reducing driver fatigue and enhancing highway safety, and Road Sign Assist (RSA), which recognizes traffic signs and displays them on the instrument cluster to keep the driver informed.
Additional safety features include 7 airbags strategically placed around the cabin, ISOFIX child seat anchors for secure child passenger installation, and a reinforced body structure engineered to absorb and dissipate crash energy effectively. The GR Corolla also features adaptive cruise control for maintaining safe following distances, and electronic stability control systems to help maintain vehicle control during dynamic driving. Together, these safety technologies make the GR Corolla MT a well-rounded performance car that does not compromise on occupant protection.
Wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto

The Toyota GR Corolla MT has a 10-inch display with support for Apple Carplay and Android Auto, both of which work wired and wirelessly. It also uses a 6-speaker system which sounds great and rather bass-heavy by default. Personally, I’m not a fan of using it via the wired method as the cable needs to be connected directly to the headunit, which is an eyesore as the wire will be dangling around. If you’re worried about battery being drained heavily while using it wirelessly, you can just put your device on the wireless charger. I’ve had zero connection issues with both Android Auto and Apple Carplay so this is a major plus for me.
Cons
Gear Shifter

The gear shifter demands a longer reach and doesn’t slot in cleanly, which can detract from the overall driving experience for some enthusiasts. However, the manual iMT setup remains the enthusiast’s choice, offering a visceral connection to the car that no automatic can replicate. This setup allows drivers to feel more engaged and connected to the vehicle, enhancing the thrill of driving despite the shifter’s minor shortcomings. It’s worth pointing out that the clutch’s bite point is unusually high but this is something you can get used to over time.
Practicality and Space

Space is limited in the GR Corolla, making it less practical for families or those needing ample cargo room. Despite having four doors and modern safety features such as adaptive cruise control and ISOFIX mounts, the car prioritizes performance over practicality. This means that while it excels on the road, it may not meet the everyday needs of those looking for a versatile or a comfortable ride. Of course, it would still be more practical compared to a GR86 or even the GR Yaris, but this might not mean much since customers who would consider this are either using it as a second / weekend car or they have a small family.
Cabin Quality

The cabin materials feel basic for the price point, with scratchy plastics that detract from the overall premium feel. Sure, it has some nice additions like the wireless charger I mentioned previously. But it’s worth pointing out that if your smartphone is on the smaller side (think base model Galaxy S26 or iPhone 17), finding the sweet spot for it to charge can be a hassle. Additionally, the absence of conveniences like a central armrest reduces comfort during longer drives, though it is available in the automatic (GR-DAT) variant. It’s not entirely bad, mind you, but for a car at this price range, you would certainly expect a more refined, upmarket cabin.
Ride Comfort

The ride quality is overly stiff and unsettled, which can make daily driving less comfortable, especially on rough or uneven roads. This stiffness is a trade-off for the car’s sporty handling characteristics but may be a drawback for those seeking a more relaxed and cushioned ride. Compared to rivals such as the GR Yaris, the GR Corolla’s ride comfort is noticeably harsher, potentially limiting its appeal for everyday use.
[Editor’s Note: As we only had it for a short period of time, fuel consumption isn’t something we can gauge with accuracy so that part will be omitted for this review]
Toyota GR Corolla MT Verdict

The Toyota GR Corolla is a reminder of what sports cars used to be; raw, engaging, and unapologetically fun. It’s a car that makes you feel young again, offering just enough practicality to justify ownership while delivering thrills that few modern cars can match. At RM378,950, it’s expensive for a Corolla, but once you drive it in manual iMT form, you’ll understand why.
At the end of our Toyota GR Corolla review, I award this car with our Silver Pokdeward.

Big thanks to Toyota Malaysia for letting us use this car for the purpose of this review.
