Toyota Motor Corp has revised its global production target for 2024, reducing it to approximately 9.8 million units. This adjustment marks a significant reduction from the initial goal of around 10.3 million units, according to reports from local media, as cited by Xinhua.

This revision represents the first year-on-year production decline that Toyota has experienced in four years. The decrease in production is largely due to a partial halt in manufacturing, following a series of vehicle testing scandals and subsequent recalls within the Toyota group, Kyodo News reported, citing sources familiar with the situation.

The Japanese automaker had to stop production of three of its popular models, the Corolla Fielder, Corolla Axio, and Yaris Cross after a scandal came to light in June. This scandal raised concerns about the integrity of the vehicle testing processes, prompting Toyota to halt production to address these issues. However, Toyota announced earlier this month that the production of these models is expected to resume in early September, as the transport ministry has confirmed their safety and lifted the shipment ban.

In addition to these issues, Toyota faced further setbacks when it briefly suspended production of its Noah and Voxy minivans in July following new revelations of misconduct in vehicle testing. Compounding these challenges, the company was unable to produce its popular Prius hybrid car for more than two months due to a recall, further impacting its overall production numbers.

Despite these challenges, Toyota remains committed to maintaining a strong production presence in Japan. Of the projected 9.8 million units for 2024, approximately 3.2 million will be produced domestically. This figure is still above the 3 million units deemed necessary to sustain the group’s workforce in Japan, according to the report.

In 2023, Toyota achieved a significant milestone by producing around 10.03 million vehicles globally, surpassing the 10-million-unit mark for the first time. This achievement highlights the company’s strong manufacturing capabilities and global demand for its vehicles despite the setbacks it has encountered this year.

As Toyota works to recover from these recent challenges, the company’s focus on safety and compliance will be crucial in restoring consumer confidence and ensuring the continued success of its production operations. The company’s ability to navigate these difficulties will be closely watched by industry observers as it strives to meet its revised production target for 2024.

The reduction in Toyota’s production target underscores the impact that issues such as vehicle testing scandals, and recalls can have on even the most established and reputable automakers. Going forward, Toyota will likely place a stronger emphasis on quality control and adherence to regulatory standards to prevent similar issues from arising in the future.

Ultimately, Toyota’s response to these challenges will play a key role in shaping the company’s trajectory in the coming years as it seeks to maintain its position as a global leader in the automotive industry.
