Tracker dog sniffs out 2-year-old missing in plantation after 24 hours

MIRI – A two-year old child who went missing after wandering into a dense oil palm plantation in the Sematan district of southern Sarawak was found alive today – 24 hours after getting lost in the area riddled with dense undergrowth since early yesterday afternoon.

Muhammad Rayyan Abdul Qayyum was found about 3km from the Kg Perigi Quarry workers’ quarters at about 1pm, said the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department.

The boy was found by a tracker dog named Daisy.

His mother lodged a police report after he went missing from the quarters at around 2pm yesterday.

“The mother was waiting with the son for her husband who was working in the quarry when the boy wandered off while playing around the workers’ quarters,” the department said in a statement.

“After realising the boy had gone missing, she and the workers launched a search but could not find him. The mother lodged a police report soon after.

“Police and Fire Department units from Lundu town conducted search-and-rescue operations since yesterday but could not find the missing child.

“This morning the search was extended to a 3km radius from the point the child went missing into the oil palm plantations nearby.

“The boy was found alive at about 1pm,” it added.

The search teams also included the Civil Defence Department and nearby villagers. – The Vibes, February 16, 2023
