Trader fined RM500 for failing to help injured friend who later died

A 37-YEAR-OLD trader has been fined RM500 by the Magistrate’s Court here for negligently failing to seek medical help for his critically injured friend, who later died.

Magistrate Amalina Basirah Md Top handed down the maximum fine under Section 336 of the Penal Code to Oon Tien Yue, who paid the sum immediately. The provision penalises acts that endanger human life through negligence, carrying a penalty of up to three months’ imprisonment or a fine of RM500, or both.

Oon was charged with failing to obtain medical treatment for Law Mun How, 37, an e-hailing driver who was seriously injured and later died from his condition.

The offence took place between 10.33am on 20 June and 7.50pm on 22 June at a house in Pandan Perdana, Ampang.

According to the facts of the case, Law had been sleeping in his car in front of Oon’s home for several days after sustaining what is believed to be assault-related injuries. On 20 June, Oon brought the injured man into his house but left him in the living room without calling for medical assistance.

Authorities later found that Oon had acted negligently, resulting in Law’s death.

Deputy Public Prosecutor M. Ramanathan Alias Ashwin represented the prosecution. Oon was unrepresented. - July 10, 2025
