A trader was cheated of RM25,280 after scanning a QR code in an online Harumanis mango sale scam, with unauthorised withdrawals made from his bank account

KUALA TERENGGANU: A trader lost RM25,280 after being duped by a syndicate in an online Harumanis mango sale scam using a quick response (QR) code.

Kuala Terengganu District Police Chief ACP Azli Mohd Noor said the 53-year-old victim lodged a report yesterday after discovering the unauthorised withdrawals.

The incident began when the victim saw a Harumanis mango advertisement on Facebook and contacted the seller.

The suspect then sent a WhatsApp link containing a QR code for payment.

After scanning the code, the victim’s mobile phone became unresponsive for about 20 minutes.

Azli said the victim later contacted Maybank and was informed of three unauthorised transactions.

The transactions amounted to RM8,264, RM8,642 and RM8,374, totalling RM25,280.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
