The most traditional Malay Wedding traditions are based in rich Malaysian history and culture. With Chinese traditions, Indian customs and the Islamic religion principles and influences, Malay weddings are equal parts stunning and sentimental. I love watching the beautiful diversity among the various wedding traditions around the Asian region. While weddings represent the start of something new, they are also a chance to honor and acknowledge the couple's upbringing, educational achievements, professional development & family heritage. As such, rituals are often a part of most wedding ceremonies.

My wife, Zarina & I have attended many wedding receptions hosted by relatives, colleagues, alumni, and friends across the Asian region. However, the e-invite that I received on 08 November, 2025 was indeed very touching. It was nicely crafted, “My name is Puan Nurhidayah Augustina Abdullah (from Ipoh), and I have been reading your articles in the Newswav portal for some time. Your article on ESG & Halal practices is very interesting as I myself am interested to learn more about Halal Certification industry. At this moment, I am working with the insurance industry. So, I wish to invite you & your wife to attend ‘Akad Nikah’ and the wedding reception of my daughter, Dr. Nurul Fathiah (veterinarian) to Ir. Ahmad Ashraf (civil engineer) on 21 December, 2025 (Sunday) at MBSA Convention Center, Shah Alam.” (augustina8138@gmail.com)

Despite meeting her for the first time, Augustina warmly received us and then ushered us to the reception seated alongside with her family members. We had the golden opportunity to be greeted by the bride and groom upon the completion of Islamic and legally solemnization (akad nikah) proceedings. We witnessed Dr. Nurul & Ir. Ashraf signed their marriage contract documents administered by a prominent Imam in the present of members of both families.

We noticed many international guests came for the wedding reception and they enjoyed the stall-typed food served in addition to the buffet spread. I had a pleasant surprised conversation with Rita Rutaff, my former colleague at Malaysia Airlines Academy who's Ashraf's senior at University of Auckland.
