A 52-year-old Singaporean tourist, identified as Mr. Lee, tragically lost his life during what was meant to be a routine visit to a massage parlor in Patong Beach, Phuket.
The incident, which occurred recently, has raised concerns about health risks associated with massage therapies for individuals with pre-existing medical conditions.
Police Colonel Chalermchai Hernsawat reported that Mr. Lee started experiencing breathing difficulties shortly after finishing a 45-minute oil massage. Although parlor staff and emergency responders provided immediate first aid, he was pronounced dead upon reaching Patong Hospital. Medical professionals suspect he had already passed away at the massage parlor before medical assistance could intervene.
Mr. Lee's wife, who was present during the ordeal, disclosed that he had longstanding health issues, a sedentary lifestyle, and inadequate rest. On the day of the incident, he had consumed beer before the massage, which she noted was a frequent indulgence during their visits to Phuket. She does not suspect foul play and has declined an autopsy, opting instead to repatriate her husband’s body to Singapore for religious rites.
This incident comes on the heels of another massage-related fatality in Thailand.

A Thai singer named Pin Chayada in Udon Thani Province succumbed to complications following neck manipulations during a massage in early November 2024. The resulting injuries caused severe pain, paralysis, and eventually her death.
The back-to-back tragedies have prompted medical experts to caution against certain massage techniques, especially aggressive neck manipulations, which can damage cervical blood vessels and lead to strokes or paralysis. They also emphasized the importance of individuals with pre-existing health issues consulting healthcare providers before engaging in such activities.
While massages are generally perceived as relaxing and therapeutic, these incidents serve as sobering reminders of the potential risks involved, particularly for individuals with underlying health concerns.
Tourists and locals alike are encouraged to prioritize their safety and seek licensed, experienced professionals for their wellness needs.
