KOTA KINABALU: Zara Qairina Mahathir’s death must mark a turning point in our system, said Sabah Law Society (SLS) President Datuk Mohamed Nazim Maduarin (pic) in a statement on Thursday.

Nazim said the SLS extended its deepest condolences to the family of the 13-year-old girl, whose death has sparked serious concerns over school safety and child protection measures.

He said the incident raised wider questions about whether institutions responsible for student welfare are functioning as they should.

Nazim stressed that this case must not be ignored or forgotten, and that he calls for a transparent and independent investigation.

He said every relevant fact must be properly examined, and any weaknesses in existing procedures must be addressed in good faith.

Nazim urged all institutions involved to act with responsibility and integrity, noting that justice and reform must prevail when a child’s life is lost under such circumstances.
