In a tragic incident that has shaken the community in Relau, Penang, a 40-year-old Malaysian man suffering from mental health issues fatally stabbed his mother with scissors at their apartment. The victim, identified as 67-year-old Cai Yating, was attacked by her youngest son in a distressing turn of events on June 15.
According to reports from Sin Chew Daily, the assailant immediately called his older brother after the incident to confess to the crime. This shocking revelation prompted the brother to alert the authorities, leading to a swift response from the police, who arrived at the scene promptly and apprehended the suspect.
Assistant Commissioner Razlam Ab Hamid, the Northeast district police chief, provided further details, stating that earlier attempts by the victim's other children to reach her had gone unanswered. It was at 5 pm that the suspect disclosed to his brother that he had stabbed their mother, which tragically resulted in her death.
The suspect, who had a history of psychiatric treatment following previous threats against his family members, had been living with his mother, who alternated between staying at the Relau apartment and with her eldest child in Batu Maung. Razlam highlighted that the suspect had made threats against his family while residing in Batu Maung, underscoring ongoing familial tensions and concerns about his mental well-being.
"We are currently investigating the motive behind the stabbing," Razlam stated, emphasizing that the victim's body had been transferred to Penang Hospital for a post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death.
Following his arrest, the suspect was presented in the Balik Pulau courtroom, where police sought a 7-day remand to facilitate further investigations into the murder. The case has been classified under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which deals with offenses of murder, reflecting the severity of the incident and the legal consequences the suspect may face.
