Two young sisters tragically passed away during treatment at Melaka Hospital, while their mother remains in critical condition after a devastating fire engulfed their rented room in a four-story building on Jalan Plaza Mahkota.

According to Melaka Tengah district police chief ACP Christopher Patit, Nur Riaisha Zahra Abdullah, 2, and her sister Nuralia Karisa Abdullah, 12, along with their mother Azliha Ngah Ariffin, 40, were discovered unconscious by firefighters on the third floor of the shophouse at approximately 1:30 PM.

"A married couple who were tenants on the second floor managed to escape the blaze and are now in stable condition at the same hospital," ACP Patit reported. "The shop owner on the ground floor, who also serves as the landlord, noticed the fire around 1:30 PM and immediately called emergency services at 999."

Preliminary investigations have uncovered that the building housed 21 rented rooms across the first three floors, though only six of these rooms were occupied at the time of the incident. In total, five victims were present when the fire broke out.

The exact cause of the fire, as well as the circumstances leading to the tragic deaths of the two young girls, remains under investigation. Authorities are also making efforts to contact the family's next of kin.

The community is reeling from the shock of this tragedy, and the fire has raised concerns about the safety standards and fire preparedness in rental properties. Neighbours and local residents have expressed their condolences and are calling for stricter safety regulations to prevent such incidents in the future.

This heartbreaking incident underscores the importance of fire safety and the need for vigilance in residential and commercial properties alike. As investigations continue, the thoughts and prayers of the community are with the affected family during this incredibly difficult time.
