UiTM Strengthens Procedures Following Death of Palapes Trainee

Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) has implemented stricter protocols and enhanced monitoring mechanisms for co-curricular activities involving uniformed bodies within the institution. This move comes in the wake of a tragic incident involving the death of a Reserve Officer Training Unit (Palapes) trainee, allegedly following an intense and unscheduled training session on November 13.

In an official statement, UiTM affirmed its commitment to cooperating fully with ongoing investigations into the incident. The university expressed deep concern over the loss and emphasized that the matter is being thoroughly handled by the police and an investigation board under the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM).

UiTM is dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of all its students, the statement read, underscoring the institution's resolve to uphold its students' welfare. The university also extended heartfelt condolences and sympathies to the family of the deceased.

Earlier, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Zambry Abdul Kadir announced that a comprehensive report from the university would be obtained before determining any further action. The minister stressed the importance of accountability and transparency in addressing the incident.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) has initiated its own investigation into the circumstances surrounding the trainee's death. The investigation is being conducted by the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) Provost Marshal, who has pledged to leave no stone unturned.

The investigation will be thorough, and no individual will be shielded from accountability. Legal action will be taken against those found responsible, the ATM stated. It also urged the public to remain patient and allow the authorities to complete their investigations to ensure justice is served. Updates on the case will be shared with the public as they become available.

According to media reports, the Palapes trainee passed away following an intense training session that was allegedly unscheduled. The incident has raised serious concerns, particularly after the trainee's father, Muhammad Zaidi Abdul Rahman, came forward with allegations of physical abuse.

In his police report, Muhammad Zaidi claimed that his 25-year-old son, Amir Rusyaidi, endured severe mistreatment during the training. Allegations include being stomped on the chest, forced into degrading physical activities, and left unconscious in the sun for 30 minutes. He also alleged that the incident was recorded by the trainer involved.

The tragic loss of Amir Rusyaidi has sparked outrage and calls for systemic reforms to prevent similar incidents. The allegations of bullying and mistreatment have cast a spotlight on the management of military training programs at public universities, prompting demands for stricter oversight and accountability.

As the investigation unfolds, UiTM and ATM have reiterated their commitment to transparency and justice. Both institutions have pledged to ensure that those responsible are held accountable, reflecting their shared objective to prioritize the safety and dignity of all trainees.
