In a devastating turn of events today in Kampung Wakaf Kubor, Kampung Raja, a 20-month-old boy met with a fatal accident after being hit by a four-wheel-drive vehicle driven by his father.
Besut police chief, Superintendent Abdul Rozak Muhammad, disclosed that the incident unfolded at approximately 9:30 am as the father was maneuvering his vehicle in reverse within their home compound. Tragically, the father was unaware of his son's proximity to the vehicle, as the toddler had been engrossed in play with a mobile phone on the staircase.
"The man did not realize that his son, who had been playing with a mobile phone on the stairs of the house, had moved towards the vehicle, resulting in the boy being hit," Superintendent Abdul Rozak Muhammad lamented in a statement issued today.
Despite the father's swift action in rushing the injured child to Gong Medang Health Clinic, the medical team's efforts were in vain. Regrettably, the young boy was pronounced dead around 10:30 am.
Authorities have initiated an investigation under Section 31 (1) of the Child Act 2001 and Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 to probe the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
Superintendent Abdul Rozak underscored the importance of heightened vigilance and caution, urging the public, particularly parents and guardians, to exercise utmost care when operating vehicles within home premises. He emphasized the critical need for supervision, urging against leaving young children unattended outside the house to avert untoward incidents.
This heartbreaking incident serves as a poignant reminder of the imperative to prioritize safety within residential areas, with a focus on preventing such tragic accidents. As investigations continue, authorities extend their heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, advocating for enhanced safety measures and awareness to prevent similar incidents in the future.
