Kota Kinabalu: The Lions Club of KK Downtown has launched a youth initiative aimed at fostering leadership skills among children as young as four years old, creating a ripple effect of positive change throughout the community.
The Starshine Pride Cubs Club, officially chartered on August 26, 2023, is the first such programme in District 308-A2.
Designed specifically for children aged 4 to 12, the initiative combines community service, character development and practical leadership training.
“We wanted to create something meaningful for our children, something that helps them grow into strong, responsible individuals,” said Lions Club of KK Downtown Past President Alyssa Lim who is a key architect of the Cubs programme.
Since its launch, the Cubs have engaged in various community outreach activities, including visits to elderly care homes where the young participants provided companionship, prepared meals, offered hand massages, facilitated simple recreational activities and practiced active listening skills with residents.
The impact of these interactions was evident when one 9-year-old Cub said “I did not know old people could be so funny and kind. I want to go back and visit again”.
In another notable project, several Cubs showed compassion by donating their hair to cancer patients, showing that leadership involves personal sacrifice and empathy for others in need.
Beyond community service, the Cubs participated in Cubs Quest, an outdoor leadership adventure at Kopungit Hill.
During this expedition, the children explored historical tunnels, tackled Morse Code challenges, learned knot-tying techniques and participated in environmental conservation through trail clean-up efforts.
“We believe children need space to lead, fail, try again and grow,” said Lions Club mentor Christina Hwong.
