A chaotic transfer window is at an end with a frenzied deadline day taking the Premier League’s total spending past £3bn in a record-breaking summer.

The defining saga of the window finally reached a conclusion just hours before the window shut as Alexander Isak at last got the move he wanted to Liverpool. A terse statement from Newcastle United showed just how bad the falling out had been on Tyneside between the club and the wantaway striker - though they did have time to make their own move for another forward who had made his intention to leave clear in Brentford’s Yoane Wissa. Piero Hincapie, meanwhile, has bolstered Arsenal’s defensive options.

It looked for a long time like Liverpool would sign Marc Guehi, too, in a major deadline-day double deal, but despite paperwork being submitted for the transfer, the defender remains a Crystal Palace player. Emiliano Martinez also remains at Aston Villa after links with Manchester United - but with the window still open in Turkey and Saudi Arabia, could he, Raheem Sterling and others yet make a move?

Follow all of the latest reaction and fallout from the transfer window with our live blog below:

Alexander Isak is, however, a Liverpool player - which poses an intriguing tactical question for Arne Slot as he looks to fit both the Swedish striker and Hugo Ekitike, who has impressed early in the season, into the same starting side. When can Liverpool sign Marc Guehi?

10:45

,

Will Castle

Both clubs had agreed on a fee for the defender, who had undergone his Liverpool medical on Monday. However, the FA Cup winners withdrew from the deal after they failed to sign their preferred replacement when Igor Julio decided to join West Ham instead of Palace.

While Palace did buy another centre-back, in Jaydee Canvot, the 19-year-old was not considered ready to step in for Guehi straight away.

It means the Eagles captain will have to wait for his move away, which is still expected to come inside the next 12 months.

By forfeiting the £35m fee for Guehi, Palace now risk losing the player for free to Liverpool next summer when his contract at Selhurst Park expires.

DONE DEAL! Brighton let midfielder go

09:55

,

Harry Latham-Coyle

Brighton midfielder Matt O'Riley has signed for Marseille on a season-long loan deal.

The transfer was completed before the deadline on Monday but announced on Tuesday morning and will see the Denmark international play in Ligue 1 for the 2025/26 campaign.

The 24-year-old links up with former Seagulls boss Roberto De Zerbi, though the pair never crossed paths on the south coast.

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler said: "Matt has the opportunity to challenge himself at the highest level in France and in the Champions League.

"We have a lot of competition in the midfield positions, and while we see Matt's long-term future here with us, this gives him the potential of more game time.

"We will monitor his progress throughout the season with Marseille, and we wish him well for the rest of the season."

Alexander Isak has become the sixth player to command a fee worth in excess of £100m from a Premier League club - and perhaps slightly surprisingly, he is the first true centre forward on the list.

Jack Grealish, Manchester City - August 2021, £100m

Enzo Fernandez, Chelsea - February 2023, £106.8m

Declan Rice, Arsenal - July 2023, £100m rising to a potential £105m

Moises Caicedo, Chelsea - August 2023, £100m rising to a potential £115m

Florian Wirtz, Liverpool - June 2025, £100m rising to a potential £116m

It is understood that the 24-year-old has moved on an initial loan worth €16.5m (£14.3m) with an obligation to buy for €81.5m (£70.4m) on a five-year contract if a certain number of appearances is reached.

The Blues confirmed the news at 10pm on Monday, adding in a short statement: "We thank Nico for his efforts throughout his time at Stamford Bridge and wish him well in Germany."

Tottenham have had an intriguing summer, missing out in high-profile fashion on a couple of key targets in Morgan Gibbs-White and Eberechi Eze but improving nonetheless after pivoting to alternatives. Emiliano Martinez remains at Aston Villa

Harry Latham-Coyle

Emiliano Martinez was mentioned as a Manchester United target in the final few days of the transfer window, but a move did not materialise - despite the goalkeeper appearing to say farewell to Aston Villa at the weekend. Could the Argentina No 1 head for Galatasaray? Reports this morning suggest he may not be that keen on a move.

DONE DEAL! Ederson joins Fenerbahce

08:00

Harry Latham-Coyle

The transfer window may be shut in the Premier League but there are still a few administrative bits to be done. Gianluigi Donnarumma is expected to be confirmed as a Manchester City player in a little while, with Ederson now officially a Fenerbahce employee. It feels a strangely low-key end to the Brazilian’s eight years with the club - his was a transformative tenure between the sticks for Pep Guardiola’s side.

The four transfer window themes that sparked a frenzied end to a chaotic summer

A very good morning. The transfer window has, as I believe is the preferred parlance, slammed shut, with record spending of upwards of £3bn in the Premier League showing where the power really lies in European football. Miguel Delaney sums up a summer dominated by four key themes:

Aston Villa have completed a double deal by signing winger Jadon Sancho and midfielder Harvey Elliott on loan as Unai Emery belatedly brought in reinforcements.

Sancho has left Manchester United on a third loan in successive seasons, after spells at Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea.

Villa will pay a loan fee and have guaranteed 80 percent of his considerable wages but United had hoped to sell the England international this summer. Roma and Dortmund had both been interested in him.

Wayne Rooney questions whether Arsenal possess key quality to win Premier League title

05:00

,

Mike Jones

Wayne Rooney has questioned whether Arsenal are brave enough to win the Premier League title.

Mikel Arteta is bidding to end three years of second-place finishes and finally win the English top-fight with the Gunners, but suffered an early-season blow as his side lost to reigning champions Liverpool on the weekend.

A stunning Dominik Szoboszlai free-kick proved the difference in an otherwise largely uneventful game, with Arsenal failing to capitalise on Liverpool’s lack of fluidity throughout the contest.

Bayer Leverkusen have sacked Erik ten Hag after only two Bundesliga games in charge of the club.

Although Ten Hag won his first match at the helm – a 4-0 victory over fourth-tier SG in the first round of the German Cup – he oversaw a troubled start to the new league season. Leverkusen lost their opening game, a 2-1 home defeat by Hoffenheim, and then let a two-goal lead slip against 10-man Werder Bremen this weekend.

Manchester United complete sale of Antony while Rasmus Hojlund moves on loan

Richard Jolly

Manchester United have sold Antony to Real Betis and loaned Rasmus Hojlund to Napoli for the season as Ruben Amorim has continued his clearout of his unwanted attackers.

United have made a loss of more than £60m on Antony, the second most expensive signing in their history, with the winger joining the Spanish club in a €25m (£21.6m) package.

The Premier League club, who paid Ajax £85m for the Brazil international, will also have a 50 percent sell-on clause, while Antony will leave without a pay-off.

Unimpressive Benjamin Sesko already looks like the odd man out to raise Man United concerns

Monday 1 September 2025 23:10

,

Richard Jolly

For the second time in four days, Benjamin Sesko was the last in line. The final outfield Manchester United player to take a penalty in the shootout at Grimsby, the 20th out of 20, was the last attacking change made by Ruben Amorim against Burnley. Even when first Matheus Cunha and then Mason Mount went off injured, Sesko lingered unused, overlooked as Amorim sent for Joshua Zirkzee and then Kobbie Mainoo, a misfit and a midfielder respectively.

He was the £66m spectator; until Burnley equalised for a second time, anyway, and Sesko made his third Premier League appearance: all as a substitute, none yielding a first United goal. If Bruno Fernandes’ 97th-minute winner probably came as a relief to Amorim, it should have done to his biggest buy as well. Sesko had headed a Bryan Mbeumo cross over the bar and a Diogo Dalot centre wide.
