The summer transfer window rolls on as Premier League clubs and those around Europe look to add to their squads.
Arsenal's negotiations for Sporting's Viktor Gyokeres have stalled over a difference in overall value and terms. The Premier League club's stance is to offer €65m, with potential performance-related add-ons of €5m and €10m. Arsenal and Gyokeres had reached agreement on personal terms and director Andrea Berta has flown to Lisbon to try and get things over the line. They finally completed the Martin Zubimendi deal, a medical is planned for incoming Brentford midfielder Christian Norgaard and they have their sights on Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze, although face competition from Tottenham – who have had a bid for Mohammed Kudus rejected by West Ham.
Manchester United secured Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5m early in this window and have now nabbed teenage Paraguayan defender Diego Leon. They have re-opened negotiations with Brentford about Bryan Mbeumo, while Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho face exits from the club.
Elsewhere, Chelsea have signed Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund in a £55m deal for the former England Under-21 winger. The Blues have confirmed to signing of Brighton’s Brazil forward Joao Pedro. Newcastle are also making moves and have stepped up their pursuit of Nottingham Forest’s Anthony Elanga with a deal near.

Everton have made their biggest buy under David Moyes by bringing in striker Thierno Barry from Villarreal for £27m.
The France Under-21 international has signed a four-year deal and becomes Everton’s second signing of the summer, after Charly Alcaraz, with the largest fee they have paid since Amadou Onana’s arrival in 2022.
Barry comes in as a replacement for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who left on a free transfer, while with the end of Armando Broja’s loan spell, Everton had lost two strikers since the end of last season.

Miguel Delaney
Arsenal are working on a payment structure for a bid that could allow them to sign Eberechi Eze without a substantial sale this summer.
Mikel Arteta went into the window with a budget for Martin Zubimendi and a forward - currently expected to be Sporting's Viktor Gyokeres - as well as one or two less expensive signings like Brentford's Christian Norgaard, with any further signings expected to be funded by outgoings to comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability (PSR) rules. Arsenal are nevertheless serious about doing Eze and this summer, and there is a hope that a suitable deal can be worked out.

Arsenal's negotiations for Sporting's Viktor Gyokeres have stalled over a difference in overall value and terms.
The Premier League club's stance is to offer €65m, with potential performance-related add-ons of €5m and €10m.
That takes the overall value of Arsenal's package to €80m, but Sporting's hard line is that they want €70m guaranteed, with no add-ons.

QPR await contact as Leicester consider Marti Cifuentes as new manager

Harry Latham-Coyle
Queens Park Rangers have not yet had any contact from any club about former manager Marti Cifuentes, despite Leicester City’s reported interest in the Catalan, and the fact that the Loftus Road club retain compensation rights.
The Independent understands that the compensation is only payable by another club or national federation, should Cifuentes take such a job.
The 43-year-old left QPR at the end of June after a broadly successful but fractious period in which he achieved success in keeping the club up in 2023-24, albeit after last season’s surge tailed off.
QPR have decided to go in another direction, with the anticipated appointment of former Strasbourg coach Julien Stephan.
One of the terms of their mutual separation agreement with Cifuentes, however, was that any compensation is only payable by another club or federation.

How Kyle Walker and Burnley can make unlikely marriage a success
11:00
,
Richard Jolly
It was, Kyle Walker said, “an opportunity I jumped at”. Two years ago, the scramble for his services was between Manchester City and Bayern Munich, a contest that meant a 33-year-old got a three-year deal. And so, had everything gone to either of his plans, he would now be planning for a final season at either the Etihad Stadium or the Allianz Arena.
Instead, the opportunity he grasped was to go to Burnley. One interpretation is to say that it is a sign of how far and how fast the mighty have fallen: a year ago, Walker played in the final of Euro 2024 and was (somehow) named in the team of the tournament. This season, he may have thought, would have ended with him captaining City to the Premier League or Champions League titles; perhaps even the Club World Cup.
Rather than the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, however, Walker is at the homelier confines of Turf Moor. He was not even named in the City squad that Pep Guardiola took to the United States.

New Rangers boss Russell Martin coy on Jamie Vardy links

Harry Latham-Coyle
Russell Martin has refused to be drawn on reports linking Rangers with a move for former England and Leicester striker Jamie Vardy.
The 38-year-old forward, who has seen a move to Genoa fall through, has now been heavily touted for a switch to Ibrox after leaving the Foxes at the end of last season.
Recently appointed Rangers boss Martin remained coy but refused to dismiss the prospect, when asked after his side's 2-2 pre-season friendly draw at home to Club Brugge on Sunday if Vardy was a target.
"I think I've been asked about so many players," he said. "Some miles away, some on the money. So basically, I'm not going to give you an answer on that.
"But I guess you'll find out who's real and who's not in the next few weeks."

Man United’s five exiled players are a big problem of their own making
09:45
,
Richard Jolly
If a theme of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s reign as Manchester United’s co-owner has been reducing the head count at Old Trafford and Carrington, Ruben Amorim may have shown signs he is buying into it. As United began pre-season training, five players were told not to report for work. Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia are the absent five. United said they had asked to leave the club. The alternative perspective is that the club was more proactive in telling them they had no future.
Either way, when they could have been in Carrington, they are instead in limbo. And if United’s show of strength amounted to backing for Amorim, there were signs an attempt to usher in a new era had already begun. United have started to sign the replacements before selling the incumbents. Matheus Cunha has arrived for £62.5m. Bryan Mbeumo could soon follow for a similar fee.
