18:20

Chris Wilson

Enzo Maresca has advised Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell that they will have to leave Chelsea to play regular football, but insisted that his bloated squad was “not a mess”.

The London club secured their latest summer signing on Wednesday as Joao Felix sealed a return to Stamford Bridge, with Conor Gallagher completing a move the other way to Atletico Madrid.

It now leaves the club looking to offload perhaps as many as a dozen players before the end of the transfer window as they try to whittle down their senior playing group.

“To everyone at Chelsea football club, and especially the fans, I want to say thank you for everything in the last 18 years,” he says.

“You made my dreams come true and I’ll forever be grateful.”

Chelsea announced the signing of Atletico’s Joao Felix hours after Gallagher’s move was completed.

Chelsea sign Joao Felix from Atletico Madrid as Conor Gallagher heads to Spain

17:45

Chris Wilson

Perhaps the biggest news of the day so far...

Joao Felix has completed a return to Chelsea rejoining the Blues on a permanent transfer in a deal that could rise in excess of £46m.

The 24-year-old spent six months on loan at Stamford Bridge in the 2022/23 season and scored four times in 20 appearances. He has signed a seven-year contract.

His return comes after a long-running transfer saga which saw Chelsea negotiate a deal to send midfielder Conor Gallagher in the opposite direction with a move to Atletico Madrid. The 24-year-old, who came through the youth ranks at Stamford Bridge, has signed a five-year contract with the Spanish side after the clubs agreed a reported £33.7m fee.

Napoli in for Lukaku

17:30

Chris Wilson

The transfer news just doesn’t stop coming at Chelsea.

Now, Fabrizio Romano has an update on the previously outcast Romelu Lukaku, who was signed for £97.5m in 2021.

The Italian transfer guru has posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, that a deal for Lukaku is “expected to happen as Napoli are advancing in talks with Chelsea”.

“[The] Napoli director will meet with Chelsea in London in the next 24 hours to proceed and try [to] find [the] final solution.

“All parties involved expect Lukaku to become [a] new Napoli player” in the coming days.

It is also expected that this deal could be the catalyst for Chelsea eventually signing current Napoli striker Victor Osimhen.

Ugarte moving closer to United?

17:15

Chris Wilson

Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg is reporting that Manchester United’s much-publicised move for Manuel Ugarte from PSG is getting closer to its conclusion.

He says that it will be “either a permanent deal or a loan with an obligation to buy”, adding that it is “not a done deal yet”.

“But all parties involved to get the deal done soon. Verbal agreement [on contract terms with the player] is done and sealed”.

17:00

Chris Wilson

Sky Sports’ Kaveh Solhekol is reporting that Chelsea are wasting no time in moving on from Raheem Sterling, with new signing Pedri Neto set to take the England international’s number seven shirt.

Neto wore the No. 19 shirt when he made his debut against Manchester City on Sunday, coming on as a second-half substitute in the 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge.

Sterling had switched to No. 7 last season, but new Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca says the 29-year-old is training away from the first team and is not in his plans, as he “prefers a different kind of winger”.

Meanwhile, new signing Joao Felix will wear the No. 14 shirt which had belonged to Trevoh Chalobah.

Players Chelsea could look to move on this summer

16:40

Chris Wilson

With Gallagher and Broja already gone and Felix arriving from Atletico, who could Chelsea move on as they look to improve their squad?

Raheem Sterling is almost certain to leave, as is Ben Chilwell, with both having been told by Enzo Maresca that they are not in his plans.

But who else could leave Stamford Bridge?

Romelu Lukaku

The Belgian striker has spent the last two seasons on loan in Serie A, first with Inter Milan and then with Roma. A permanent switch to Italy now seems likely: Napoli, now under the management of Antonio Conte, are strong suitors.

Kepa Arrizabalaga

Still the world’s most expensive goalkeeper, Kepa’s reputation is in need of repair after a tough time on loan at Real Madrid last season that saw him usurped by Andriy Lunin soon after Thibaut Courtois suffered a serious injury. A fresh start may do him some good.

Djorde Petrovic

Petrovic featured 23 times during his debut Premier League season, though may also be cut from the goalkeeper group as Maresca looks to sculpt his side. The Serbian could be available for a loan move or depart permanently.

Trevoh Chalobah

Another of those perhaps feeling now is the time to find a regular starting spot is centre-half Chalobah. A number of mid-table Premier League clubs have been linked with the 25-year-old.

David Datro Fofana

Fofana spent time with Union Berlin and Burnley on loan last season having arrived from Molde in January 2023. Capped thrice by the Ivory Coast, Everton, Leicester and Galatasaray have been mentioned as possible admirers.

Pellistri seals move to Greece

16:20

Chris Wilson

Manchester United have announced that Uruguayan winger Facundo Pellistri has completed a move to Athens-based side Panathinaikos.

The fee is understood to be around £5m, with performance related add-ons of around £1.5m.

The Greek Cup holders are coached by Diego Alonso, who was Uruguay manager between 2021 and 2023.

Fulham in a move for promising French youngster?

16:05

Chris Wilson

In addition to those deals for Berge and Andersen, The Athletic are reporting that Fulham have submitted an offer for promising French youngster Rayan Cherki.

The Lyon player featured for France at the Olympics and is a highly regarded talent in his home country, with several big teams having been linked in the past.

“The proposal for the France Under-21 international is worth an initial £12million, with further add-ons,” write Matt Woosnam and Peter Rutzler.

Fulham to finalise two deals

15:50

Chris Wilson

Sky Sports reports that Fulham are in the process of finalising two deals.

Joachim Andersen is currently undergoing his medical as part of a move totalling roughly £30m – Fulham are hopeful of having the centre-back registered by midday on Friday, so he can be available for Saturday’s game against Leicester City.

In addition, Burnley’s Sander Berge is also in the process of having his medical, ahead of a move worth up to £25m (with £5m being performance-related add-ons).

Announcements for both deals could come within the next 24 hours.

Is a deal close for the purchase of Everton?

15:35

Chris Wilson

Reports from France suggest that a deal for the purchase of Everton is close.

L’Equipe report that Crystal Palace part-owner John Textor will meet with Farhad Moshiri today, as he looks to progress a possible takeover of the Merseyside club.

The Texan is waiting to sell his shares in Crystal Palace before he can take over Everton, but should find an agreement ‘by the end of the week’.

Brighton to switch left-backs for the season?

15:20

Another Fabrizio Romano report, this one linked to Brighton.

Sterling up for sale

14:30

Mike Jones

Sterling, who Chelsea bought from Man City for £50m teo years ago, had discussions with manager Enzo Maresca after training on Friday and told he was not in the head coach’s first-team plans.

Chelsea will allow Sterling to leave if he can secure a move before the window closes a week on Friday.

13:50

Chris Wilson

The Daily Express are reporting that Barcelona may have turned their attentions to signing Man United winger Marcus Rashford, with the Catalan club having failed in pursuits of Nico Williams and Rafael Leao.

Chris Wilson

According to Sky Sports, Newcastle have extended their search for a central defender by enquiring about Chelsea’s Axel Disasi.

In addition, Sky report that the Magpies have opened talks with Bayer Leverkusen over defender Edmond Tapsoba.

It is thought that both players would cost less than Marc Guehi, though a move for the England international remains open.

Liverpool keen on Hincapie?

13:30

Chris Wilson

Reports abroad are linking Liverpool with a potential move for Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapié, who can play either at centre-back or left-back.

The Reds would reportedly face competition from Spurs and Atletico for the Ecuadorian’s signature.

Liverpool remain the only premier League side not to make a signing so far this summer, though they look to be on the brink of agreeing a deal for Valencia ‘keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Chelsea sign Joao Felix from Atletico Madrid

13:23

Mike Jones

Joao Felix has completed a return to Chelsea rejoining the Blues on a permanent transfer in a deal which could rise in excess of £46m.

The 24-year-old spent six months on-loan at Stamford Bridge in the 2022/23 season and scored four times in 20 appearances.

The Portugal forward has signed a seven-year contract and becomes the latest addition to Chelsea’s unbelievably huge squad.

Arsenal latest

13:20

Chris Wilson

Arsenal seem to be moving forward in their deal for Mikel Merino, which was labelled as “just a matter of time” by Fabrizio Romano.

In addition, the Gunners are looking at Espanyol ‘keeper Joan García as a replacement for Aaron Ramsdale, who could be on his way to Wolves.

Mikel Arteta’s side continue to be linked with a move for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, though that move looks increasingly unlikely as the window nears an end.

Arsenal are hoping to offload some players too, with Eddie Nketiah the subject of interest from Nottingham Forest.

Man United latest

13:05

Chris Wilson

Manchester United hope to oversee at least five more exits this summer, with Facundo Pellistri soon to join Panathinaikos and a deal for Hannibal Mejbri to join Burnley also in the works.

In addition, there are deals for Scott McTominay, Will Fish and perhaps Jadon Sancho on the cards.

United have also offered Christian Eriksen to Ajax, and they are hoping for at least £5m.

United still hope to agree a deal with PSG for Manuel Ugarte too – likely a loan with obligation to buy. The Red Devils are reportedly still considering a move for a left-back too, with Ben Chillwell mentioned among targets.

Merino move “a matter of time"

12:55

Chris Wilson

Fabrizio Roman has claimed that Arsenal’s move for Real Sociedad’s Mikel Merino is “just [a] matter of time”, with the Spaniard still sitting out of training with the Basque club.

As reported by The Independent, Arsenal’s first offer of just over €30m was rejected by the San Sebastian-based club.

Italy round-up

12:40

Chris Wilson

Juventus continue to be one of the most active clubs in Serie A, with the Bianconeri looking to offload Federico Chiesa before completing a deal for Atalanta’s Teun Koopmeiners and Fiorentina’s Nico Gonzalez. French defender Pierre Kalulu arrived in Turin for his medical this morning, while Daniele Rugani has been loaned to Ajax for one season.

AC Milan have offloaded Kalulu to a direct rival, but one player the refuse to sell is Rafa Leao. In addition, the Rossoneri have agreed a deal for Ajax’s Silvano Vos, a 19-year-od defensive midfielder.

Napoli are close to announcing a deal for Benfica’s David Neres, and are looking to complete a deal for Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku too – that would ideally be a loan with obligation to buy, with Victor Osimhen potentially going the other way. Reports also suggest that the Partenopei are stepping up their hunt for Scott McTominay.

Defending champions Inter Milan have been quieter in the market, having rejected the chance to sign Paulo Dybala. They have been heavily linked to Independiente Rivadavia centre-back Tomás Palacios, and are reportedly considering a move for free agent Adrien Rabiot.

In addition, one of Marko Arnautovic or Joaquin Correa are expected to leave the club this summer.

Spain round-up

12:20

Chris Wilson

Atletico Madrid have continued their impressive window, adding Conor Gallagher to the signings of Julian Alvarez, former Villarreal striker Alexander Sorloth (who was the second top-scorer in La Liga last season) and Euro 2024 winner Robin Le Normand.

Real Madrid remain inactive in the market, with Ancelotti saying the squad is closed and the only rumour coming from the club regarding the sale of Nico Paz.

Barcelona continue to be linked with a dozen players, but their financial situation is proving problematic, having been priced out of moves for luis Diaz, Nico Williams and Rafael Leao. Most rumours are linking their players with moves away – one such player is Frenkie de Jong.

Federico Chiesa is the lastest winger to be linked with the Blaugrana, but sporting director Deco has said that he expects more signings to arrive.

In terms of outgoings, Brazilian forward Vitor Roque is in line to join Real Betis on loan.

Perhaps the most high-profile sale remains the potential departure of Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad to Arsenal.

Nottingham Forest repotedly close to deal for Nketiah

12:05

Chris Wilson

Despite that earlier report of a Forest bid for Feyenoord’s Santiago Gimenez, The Athletic reports that Forest are close to agreeing a fee for Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah.

David Ornstein says that “talks also progress on personal terms”, with Forest having “seen an opening bid worth £25million including add-ons rejected”.

The report adds that Nketiah is Forest’s top target in that position, with Arsenal “looking for a figure more in the region of £30-35million”.

Ten players Chelsea could sell to fund summer spending spree

11:55

Chris Wilson

With yet another young forward seemingly on their way to the club, Chelsea will now look to shear their swollen squad down to something resembling a suitable size.

The impending arrival of Joao Felix would be a ninth signing of another busy summer of incomings at Stamford Bridge as Todd Boehly’s consortium again bid to prove themselves as masters of the market after overseeing 12th and sixth-placed finishes in their first two seasons at the club.

Enzo Maresca must now decide which players to prioritise and which players he is willing to part with ahead of the end of the transfer window as the club seek to recoup some cash and cut down his senior playing group.

Like all Premier League clubs, Chelsea will have to submit a 25-player squad after deadline day on Friday August 30, with eight of those players classed as homegrown but no limit on registering players aged 21 or under.

Here are ten squad members who could be headed for the exit before the end of the month:

Liverpool latest

11:40

Chris Wilson

The main story around Liverpool is the deal involving Valencia ‘keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who seems to be on his way to Anfield as reported by The Independent – with a loan likely in his first season, at least.

As with all of the big six clubs though, rumours persist around a number of players – it’s up to fans to consider which ones are concrete!

Names linked to the Reds in the last few days include Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite, Sporting defender Goncalo Inacio, Palace’s Marc Guehi and Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon.

Liverpool continue to look to offload players too, with Joe Gomez being looked at by Villa and Palace, and Sepp van den Berg locked in a mini-saga between Brentford and Bayer Leverkusen.

Forest launch another bid for Feyenoord striker

11:25

Chris Wilson

Fabrizio Romano with another report – this time it’s on Nottingham Forest, who have launched an audacious £30m bid for Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez.

Forest are also interested in Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah if they can’t get the Gimenez deal over the line.

City consider move for Celtic striker

11:15

Chris Wilson

The Athletic’s Sam Lee is reporting that Manchester City are considering a move for Celtic striker Kyogo Furuhashi.

He adds that City’s main focus is on finalising the deal for Gundogan before they decide whether to go for a striker as a replacement for Julian Alvarez.

Furuhashi scored in Celtic’s 4-3 win over City in preseason.

Another player out the door at Chelsea

11:05

Chris Wilson

Another player has left Chelsea, though this one is a loan with option to buy.

Bashir Humphreys has left the London club to join Burnley on loan, with the Clarets having an option to buy at the end of the season for £12m plus around £2m in add-ons.

United offered loan with obligation to buy for Ugarte – but PSG’s valuation remains too high

10:55

Chris Wilson

The Daily Mail reports that PSG have offered a loan with obligation to buy deal to Manchester United for Manuel Ugarte, allowing him to join the club this season with United agreeing to pay £51m for the Uruguayan next summer.

However, United deem that valuation too high from PSG – they value Ugarte at around £42m, while PSG want to recoup the entire fee they paid to Sporting.

Ugarte made 37 appearances for the French champions last season, but was left out of the squad for their Ligue 1 opener against Le Havre last week.

Conor Gallagher signed by Atletico Madrid

Newcastle haven’t given up on Guehi yet

10:45

Chris Wilson

Sky Sports report that Newcastle still haven’t given up hope of signing Marc Guehi, despite having multiple bids turned down.

The Tyneside club are hopeful of reaching a compromise with Palace, though their most recent bid of £65m (£60m + £5m) bid was rejected last week. Reports suggest that Palace value Guehi at a level closer to £65m plus £5m in add-ons.

Newcastle are assessing other options in case the move fails to materialise, though it is understood that Fulham’s imminent deal for Andersen won’t affect Palace’s stance on Guehi.

Palace submit bid for Lacroix

10:35

Chris Wilson

Further to that comment on Palace’s interest in Wolfsburg defender Maxence Lacroix, Fabrizio Romano is reporting that the south London side have nowmade a bid for the French defender.

The proposed deal is reportedly worth £12m as a fixed fee plus £2m in add-ons.

Romano adds that “Lacroix wants to leave Wolfsburg and has only one year left on his contract, while Glasner considers him among top targets”.

10:25

Chris Wilson

Plenty of exclusives dropping from Fabrizio Romano today. Just before the Gundogan announcement, he reported that Conor Gallagher has completed his move to Atletico Madrid.

Sky Sports reported earlier in the day that Gallagher had trained with Atleti ahead of the move, and Romano has now said that Gallagher “signs in as new Atlético Madrid player from Chelsea”.

He adds that a fee of €42m euros has been agreed, and it’s “all sealed now”.

Gundogan set to seal return to Manchester City

10:18

Chris Wilson

It looks like Ilkay Gundogan has sealed his return to Manchester City this summer, as Fabrizio Romano has given the move the ‘here we go’.

Romano reports that Gundogan will leave Barca on a free, joining his old club in a deal running until summer of 2025.

He adds that an “agreement [was] reached after positive talks in last 48 hours, and Pep Guardiola said yes, as revealed yesterday”.

Brentford remain firm on asking price for Toney

10:15

Chris Wilson

Sky Sports are also reporting that Brentford are “standing firm on their price for Ivan Toney”.

Al Ahli approached Brentford before the weekend to make an offer, and talks are ongoing, but the Saudi club are still some way from Brentford’s valuation.

Thomas Frank had decided the England international should not be involved in their opening win over Crystal Palace on Sunday.
